I have a manual FL2 TD4. This evening I was reversing out of a car park, stalled, reversed a bit more. Went forward a bit, stalled, then had a very odd noise from the engine as if it was almost stalling. I tried to put the car in to neutral but the gear lever was all floppy. I stalled the engine by lifting my foot of the clutch.
Now, the engine starts and runs normally if I have my foot on the clutch. If I lift off slowly the car creeps forward, more like it is in third rather than the first (which I thought it was in). I can stop the engine with the button if the clutch is pressed.
The gear lever is all floppy and won't disengage third (or first, which ever gear it is in).
And ideas what is going on? My guess is something collapsed in the linkage between the lever and the gear box.
I'll be calling the breakdown people in the morning. Richard M

The gear change lever is attached to the gearbox by a cable. It could have snapped, which I’ve not heard of, or it might have become so loose that something has jumped out of its mounting. The gearbox end is easy to see, just underneath the air filter. The gear change end is a little more difficult.

It's at the garage now but they are very busy to it could be a week before I hear anything.

It was the cable that had failed.
£137+vat for the cable and four hours labour. The dash had to come out.
At least it wasn't the gearbox. Richard M

I doubt very much that the dash had to come out, the console perhaps!
I had to remove the dash in the wife's MX5 recently to fix an aircon issue. Not a job for the faint hearted, in fact most repairers won’t even quote for it, due to the high labour costs involved.
If anybody can remove/refit a dash on a FL2 in four hours they deserve all the plaudits they can get! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
