It might remove the rose tinted glasses from us who remember loving driving early examples whilst in the forces during the 1960s.
I am sure that I would be in for a shock after driving many miles in a 'modern' Land Rover Freelander. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I had a couple of freebie days at Eastnor around 2001 courtesy of the a JLR dealership - driving Defenders. FL1s , RRs and Disco 2s. Both times it was very wet and muddy and the FL1s kept getting stuck.
It was fun but not worth £1750 Jules

I would guess anything like that, the insurance must cost a fortune. Only have to look on tv advertising, find someone to blame and have a claim.

Over the years I have been lucky enough to get 2 free half days at Honiton LR Experience Centre.

I addition to the couple of hours driving around in the woods and on their special 'trick' inclines, pools, etc, I was allowed to try out the vehicles on the normal surrounding roads.

Day 1 was in the (then new) Discovery Sport, then Day 2 was in a RR Sport. I was very impressed by the level of grip shown, even when some wheels were visibly off the ground, or on rollers.

I took my brother, and we both had a go. A very enjoyable day out.

Like you we had 2 free half days at Honiton. One with a Disco Sport and another with the new Discovery. Both great fun on and off road with excellent L/R staff. Wouldn't mind another one  MY 2013 SD GS Auto

I beg to differ on the Honiton experience I have been twice and thought that it was just a slow cruise around the woods trying out the hill decent control. Perhaps it wasn't wet enough as it was in the summer on both occasions but the track didn't seem that challenging to me. My son was with me on one occasion and he agreed. He is an Agronomist and travels around a variety of farms advising on crops etc. and used to drive FL2s but switched to a Mitsubishi L200 which with low range and diff lock would get him out of most difficult situations. He now works in Kenya and has a Ford Ranger which he thinks is great especially with the chunky tyres. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

I agree that the DS and the RRS that I tried did make light work of the conditions, although I had quite a shock when I got out at a few places, to get some photos, just how difficult it was to walk and stand on the steep slippery slopes in the wood.

It just made me more impressed on how the cars allowed me to easily slot the cars along the narrow tracks and around the (often badly cambered) corners.

The test area of various 'toys' that demonstrated the various levels of grip when traversing steep slippery slopes up, down and sideways, and wading would have defeated most normal vehicles.

Also - Although I love my FL2, I must admit I would have willingly driven the RRS home and kept it. It's an impressive car both on and of the road. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I had a freebie at Eastnor in a defender and to be honest, was totally underwhelmed. We didn’t get to do anything that I wouldn’t have put my Freelander 2 through.
A half day at Honiton where SWMBO found it quite difficult to stand up out on the course due to the slopes and a New Years Day drive around closed roads and green lanes of East Devon. The limit for an FL2 is often the fuel tank being the lowest point of the car!

My father was an early adopter of the FL2 in 2007, coming from having owned a few Range Rovers. Just prior to his taking delivery of his first FL2, his dealer in Market Harborough offered him an experience at the Rockingham Castle LR testing ground.

Both my father and I were immensely impressed with what the FL2 could do. We had an expert take us around first before he then instructed both of us, as we took it in turns to drive. This cemented in our minds what a capable off-roader the FL2 was then and remains to this day.

My late father had two FL2s over the course of the following seven years. They are what has led me to owning mine.
