Replacing key fob shell

Hi, I have done a search and read quite a few posts on replacing the key fob shell, is it really necessary to destroy the original to get to the internals ? I have changed a few other makes over the years and they have tended to come apart fairly easily, I have a new case to use but just wanted to check first, thanks.

The original case once opened doesn't always fit back as it should so it is sacrificial. An aftermarket case should snap back firmly.

Thanks, I didn’t want to get too brutal with it just in case there was a magic trick to get it open.

You don't state which car you have in your title.

I have ordered a few covers LR078922 from the site sponsors, cheap enough, the same cover for my Freelander as for my sister's Evoque which I ordered a couple. Never had an issue reusing covers to replace the battery. The only issue was the rubber cover goes a bit dodgy, therefore buying new covers. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I have done a few, and you remove the key part first, then put a pair of long nosed pliers in the hole, then pull the handles apart to seperate the two parts. The originals are glued, and they can crack down the edge. New pattern shells are cheap enough. Ther are people who refurbish the whole key for around £25, so its another way to go.

Thanks, I have a new shell to use, just going to try the second spare key in the car to make sure it’s ok, then I can attack the one that’s worn out.
