robblue, i too, miss my Td5 Disco 2. So many people thought the Td5 was a BMW engine and not designed by Landrover.
Great driving position but i do like my FL2. Had always said when the D2 went we would get an Fl2. Jim A

At least now I know why the timing chain renewal costs so much - couldn't have made it more difficult if they had tried.
Wait a minute they did, as they put them at the flywheel end meaning engine out time. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

If any ones interested i have a copy of November 2019 LRM magazine with an interesting article about this engine. Major problems reported with this unit in the Discovery Sport models sold in 2016/17. Oil dilution causing cams and balance shaft failures.I can give more info if your interested. Shame really as living in Wolverhampton, where there built it,s god to support local employment.

one of the many putting my money where my mouth is by buying a Disco Sport. The Ingenium engine when it's running is a peach, like many first iterations it has weaknesses, but the worst thing is that it doesn't actually fit in standard form in the DS - the car it was actually designed for.

The exhaust is wrong, meaning that the DPF is in the wrong place meaning that it has to do far too many active DPF regenerations. Active regen puts fuel into the exhaust stroke, so obviously some gets into the sump diluting the oil - which is always going to end in tears.

Easy fixes
1) Tell the driver it is doing a regeneration so that he/she doesn't turn the engine off until it's finished.
2) Buy a D240, different exhaust very different turbo, runs hot enough to do passive regenerations that doesn't include injecting excess fuel.
3) buy a petrol - no DPF
4) buy one with 3 cylinders, so that they work harder/hotter and more room for important stuff.

Balance shaft bearings - now here's my take. The forums will tell you that oil dilution causes balance shaft failure. Bought my D240 when she had 6k on the clock, so not enough time to have failed enough regens to dilute the oil. The balance shaft bearings were shot, they were replaced with modified shafts/bearings - 3rd or 4th iteration so there is a design flaw, don't take oil dilution as an excuse.

In 53,000 miles in our 2018 D240 the oil level has never gone up - actually drops from max to min between services, our 2016 D180 would raise the oil level from midway to 6mm above maximum every 10,000 miles.

My take, the Ingenium diesel engine is a good piece of kit let down by rushed software and poor exhaust architecture. Planning on doing at least as many (180k+) miles in this DS as we did in our FL2. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Agree, in the article it does say that there were not any problems when fitted in the Jaguar with in line engine situation.
