I’m starting to think the general consensus is to bite the bullet and lay out £600 on a set of four branded tyres.

Before forking out anymore money, swap tyres front to back. Wear some builders gloves to save knuckles. I have done it on my car a few times as I have 2 spare wheels so I swap out the 2 most worn & the 2 best go on the front. About one hour work. The new were on the back when the noise started, since swapped front to back and the noise is still there sadly. |

I’ll second Bob, tyres are the only things that are connecting your car to the road. |

The tyres that you have pictured seem to have regular sized and spaced blocks around the circumference.

My tyres in this thread. The tread & sides are various sizes. I looked a bit closer this time & never really noticed just how much the variation is.

If you have an unused spare stick it on the rear left, it's the rear corner you hear the best from the driving position, & see if there is a difference. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If the noise only appeared straight after the new tyres were fitted it is likely that the tyres are the cause. Noise from a wheel bearing would tend to increase as you add force to the effected wheel bearing by cornering. The nose bearing on the diff tends to cause a droning that increases frequency with speed. You have to remember that the rear diff is not really under any load at the speeds you’ve mentioned the noise occurs at unless the Haldex is malfunctioning so drive or overrun wouldn’t really make a lot of difference to loading and noise.
