Automatic Gearbox Fluid

Automatic gearbox fluid

Hi has anybody ever used this stuff before. I have a 2011 SD4 auto with about 120k on it and I very much doubt the oil has ever been touched. I have read so many threads and watched videos on this subject that I am now starting to doubt myself. The gearbox is starting to get clunky so its definitely due a change. I already have 15 liters of this and so would rather not buy a load more if its the right stuff, if not, does anyone want some ATF ? I’ve cut and pasted the spec below and it does say AW1 and I believe that is what I’m after. It’s got to the stage I’m starting to doubt myself.

It says "Aisin Warner AW-1; JWS 3309; JWS 3324 (ATF WS)"
What else do you need to know ?

What does your manual say? Jules

The fluid you want for 2011 onwards is JWS 3324 (AW1). That's listed for your fluid. are you doing it yourself?

Thanks, it’s just that I have read so much about this, there are pages and pages on this and other forums I wondered if anyone else had used this Comma fluid. I thought it was the right stuff but got a touch of the ‘seconds’. I’m going to have a go myself at draining it and refilling. At 3 liters at a time, the forums suggest all at once might be to big a shock.

Automatic gearbox oil

Hello defendersv, I can understand your plight regarding the Comma brand of automatic gearbox oil, well I spent a while researching this oil and in the end having exhausted the minefield of auto gear oils asked the advice of a main dealer friend which oil brand is suitable having priced up main dealer stealer oil which in fact has the same Dexron spec grade you have quoted,
Dexron 11, 11E, 111, 111H, or VI. Volvo, Ford, Honda, It’s the Dexron spec you need to look for.

I then emailed the Company Morris oils who came up with the Liquimatic DS, So I purchased 16litres of that oil and purchased 1 litre of the Comma oil you mentioned, poured out a drop of each into separate glass containers and it’s exactly the same colour, texture and smell, I also had a little oil smuggled out of the dealers which in fact the bottle said Landrover with exactly the same Dexron spec. Again as before same colour, smell etc.
Beforehand tho the dealer oil price was extortionate, Comma was very cheap but the Morris oil was competitive as I also bought the engine oil and they gave me a good discount.

Please make sure the surfaces around the filler plug are clinically clean as you do not want something to fall in,

I did the dump and fill method which every drain was exactly 4 litres, this took me a Saturday morning to do and I could not believe how black the 1st change was it was similar to treacle, but not smelly burnt. I did pour some into a glass jam jar to check for deposits which there wasn’t. Left overnight.

I did though replace the fill plug and seal also the drain plug/level plugs too.

The gear changes are so smooth now and it’s only the tacho needle drop I know the gearbox has changed gear, what an excellent well done job I did, well pleased and the reassurance that fresh oil is now circulating the gearbox and cooler.

You just need to check the gearbox oil level at the correct temp 65 degrees C. That was the only tricky bit, a four mile run using manual and auto on a steady run will suffice if you haven’t got a diagnostic tool.

Hope this advice helps you?

Aisin Warner make the FL2 auto gearbox and their spec is JWS 3309 or JWS 3324 for later models.

Dexron specs go back many decades and I have no idea which now fit the AW specs.

Dexron 11, 11E, 111, 111H, or VI - they should be roman numerals

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEXRON

There are many Dexrons, so better check the specs to see which are compatible with Aisin Warner. Jules

Gearboxes are funny things. My 1988 Defender had a manual LT77 gearbox which used a Dexron ATF ! Jules

I do the Gibbons method, well a slightly modified version. It is based on the Volvo fluid change same auto box. Volvo used to do a fluid change kit with pipes ( they may still sell it).

@I like chips
Im going to try the "Gibbons" method next (I had to look it up I initially thought it meant you needed long arms Laughing ) - seems a lot less hassle once set up.
How do you go about it ?
Im not sure which is the input and output pipes to the ATF cooler - though I think that's been covered somewhere on thiis forum. Jules

"Come on everybody it's Gibbon time"

Just a few points.

The work requires two people , one to fill and empty the other to turn the engine on and off.

It's the bottom pipe the lower one of the two into the auto box that needs to be taken off. I suggest you replace the O ring at the end of
the job so get a couple of new O rings prior.
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/l...aling.html

Don't over tighten the pipe connector bolt, it's steel and goes into the aluminium box case. If you are going to go through
the gears on each flush it will be on and off a few times.

On my box four flushes of three litres each give a good red colour. The box is then filled and the fluid level procedure
done.

Since it's a easy job I am happy to do it every 24,000 miles. I have done it 3 times now.

As an aside and a grump I have enough Ravenol for the next flush so am very careful not to spill a drop but will need to
re think and move over to Smith and Allan after that as I have done with the engine oil. Times are getting hard.

Hi thanks for your replies. I think the sheer volume of information has led to my concerns. I’m going to use the Comma stuff I already have. I will post an update once done in case any one else is in the same predicament.

Anyone got the part numbers for the drain and level plug washers handy?
Did mine using the volvo method about 65000 miles changed it all. Its now on 92000 so will drop and change 3 litres.
And repeat next few services.
Think I'll use the Comma oil referred to by the OP. Seems ideal and decent price. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I got the set from Rimmer Bros for convenience but the postage was more than the price of the washers. But probably still less than driving to Charles Hurst to get them!
