Woke gone mad

JLR have just banned the word 'Slave' as the name for any automotive part.
It is now a 'Surrogate' part. Rolling with laughter Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Nuts! "Surrogate" has a completely different meaning from "slave". Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

been there done that.

In Automation you have a master controller and several slave controllers, really simple.
Apparently we were told that slave was a bad word, so we went with daughter, but master and daughter was still not acceptable. So we were told Mother and daughter was to be used - have you ever seen a Mother control a 13 year old daughter, but I digress.

Eventually this was also thought to be too controversial.
Why can't you use client and server like the IT people - BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE SAME, a server can have many clients, but a slave only one master, apparently we are now being awkward.

Best bit is it was going to South Africa, and the automation people there were perfectly happy with master/slave as a description. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Ignoring the Woke or Anti Woke Brigades.

I have come across lots of these terms in my career, and my understanding is.

Master - Slave(s), One unit controlled by another more or less completely.

Mother - Daughter(s), Similar units that work in together with the mother co-ordinating.

Surrogate - A unit that is deputised to do the work of another.

And while we are at it

Imperial Units, an historic system of measurement based on some random lengths and weights, such as the kings arm length or some merchant's foot.

Metric Units, a more modern system designed by scientists, and based on fractions of length and weight of the real word.
(MKS units took over from CGS units during my lifetime)

The technical world could do without politics meddling in defined definitions. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
