Another one off the road. I got t-boned by a vw transporter yesterday. Garage has confirmed over £9000 repair bill, 2010 with 115k on the clock so shes gonna be a write off.

Where to next? Im thinking 2016ish disco sport or last of the freelander 2. With a brief consideration for early Merc GLE.

Any advice from those that have had a disco sport and freel2 for comparison is welcome.

Yes its done the wing, door, wheel, a pillar, b pillar, brackets, side steps, track rods, and lower arm apparently.

I had a 2008 FL2 auto for 180k - bloody good car, hard to kill.

The very early DS had the FL2 engine, but a different gearbox - sought after, drive it first to see if you like the combination.
We had a 2016 D160 Disco Sport HSE auto, initially DPF heat shield weld broke - replaced under warranty, Adblue issues fixed with a software update EVENTUALLY. Settled down to be as good as the FL2, comfortable, capable, reliable - driving position is not as "command" as the FL2, less boat like quicker and better on fuel.
They put fuel in the oil, not a problem if you change the oil every 10-12,000 miles, will probably ruin the timing chain (and therefore engine) if you leave it the full 21,000 miles between services. Check the dipstick, if it's above maximum walk away as it's a ticking time bomb.

Swapped it for a 2018 D240 Disco Sport auto - seduced by the power, even better car, hoping to keep her for at least 200k. Doesn't put fuel in the oil due to different exhaust architecture. They had issues with balance shaft bearing failure early on, changed under warranty with modified parts - no problem since. Fuel economy !! it's got 240BHP use it all and be gentle and 50mpg is possible.
LR rear brake discs are when they need changing go for any other make and they will be fine - this is relative, the FL2 managed 20k per set of rear pads, and needed new discs every 40k. Both DS needed rear discs and pads at 60k. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I had the same dilemma last year. It depends how much you like the FL2. I went for a late HSE Lux SD4. My thinking was that it was the last chance to own what is, in my opinion, a perfect vehicle for my needs. I have no regrets-a little thirsty but the interior upgrades and extra power over the TD4 outweigh the negatives. It is much quieter and more refined than the earlier FL2’s too. Have a sit in a Discovery Sport. I was underwhelmed-more car like than the FL2.

In my opinion the D240 as usual is the best of the traditional diesels before they went hybrid. DPF shouldn’t be an issue, for example 8C outside temperature, 2-3 miles from home stuck in stop / start traffic on dual carriageway she did a full regen of the DPF, that’s 3 miles in 30 minutes.
The power really is intoxicating, but a really good steady cruiser. Didn’t notice the caravan on the back even in Cornwall. Happy enough to drag son’s laden car transporter out of a field - don’t you just love the kids!
Yes the camshaft bearings were noisy when I bought her with 9k on the clock - fixed under warranty without drama. Had a couple of valves that alter camshaft timing - Technician spotted them during service, so no inconvenience.
Swapped the 20” wheels for 18” as the taller sidewalls deal with obstacles better.
Can get 28mpg, can also get 55mpg on the same 40 mile run.

Ripped the rear seats out of both DS to fit space saver.

Well, wrote off, cheque received. Cheeky 3rd party applied a value of £1300 to salvage and ‘assumed’ I was keeping the car. That’s actually panned out pretty well as Ive got to strip some retrofit bits off it and sold to a breaker friend for £1500 lol.

Went shopping today and the deal is done. A 65plate 2016 td4 disco sport will be replacing her. Delivery on friday and bought via approved used, so warranty in place for 2 years.

Facelift xenons that have been rewired internally for prefacelift.
Facelift rear lights with prefacelift plug crimped on.
Silver Colour coded standard door panel trims.
Gvif box with adaptor and rear view camera.

Then keep an eye on the sale section as will all be up in next week or so.

Will miss the Freelander but very much excited for the DS.

Indeed Andy. My first choice in colour and hse spec gives the gear i wanted with room to retrofit/upgrade the less impressive. Only thing i couldnt get was incontrol touch pro, so carplay adaptor will be on order come next payday. Already got a few cheaper mods on way and secured half the dynamic bodykit lol.
