Proximity key

Misplaced my spare key, proximity key not the type that plugs into dashboard.
Found it again when emptying washing machine 😢.
What's the chances of it ever working again?
Currently have it dessicating in a bag of rice! Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Rice is a good idea I wouldn’t press any buttons until you’re 100% sure it’s really dry any chance of opening op it ? Would be easier to clean up.

Open the case (using the emergency key in the square hole) , remove the battery, wash with distilled water and dry somewhere warm.
Fingers crossed.

My dad dropped his mobile phone in the pond last week. It wouldn't work. He dried it on top of the central heating boiler overnight. Works fine now. Jules

I am sure these methods do work, for a while.

Over time the very small amount of water will get under the 'solder resist' layer and start eating away at the copper on the PCB.
remember some parts of the copper is fine in places and they will be the first to go.

Sorry to put a 'dampener' on this topic.

Definitely remove the battery ASAP
I would flush with 90% isopropanol rather than water (get from ebay or Amazon). The isopropanol will help disperse any remaining water.
Then put somewhere warm as suggested for about a week before you insert a new battery. Not sure about the rice suggestion, just stick it on a radiator somewhere to keep warm.

I design and service electronics for a living and as long as you dry it out properly, and it has not already been damaged by the battery being left in it while wet, it should work again.

I have to disagree with "3landertwo" about PCB damage from the water itself, though if it is left with power when wet, you then get electrolysis on the board and the PCB copper starts to dissolve in that situation.

You 'disagree, then agree' ........... but we both come to the same conclusion. Very Happy

It's the impurities in the water that that does the damage.

Like most gaskets on a Freelander it will probably leak.

I have used these people I couple of years ago when I also left the key in my jeans pocket and my OH accidentally washed and tumble dried my Freelander 2 (2014) 5 button smart key, they supplied and coded the key to the car, £140 (that was a few years ago) including coding to the car which I thought was a good deal compared to LR price. The key is exactly the same just no LR logo. He does do a supply only price but you would need to take it to be coded.

Water and circuit boards don't mix

So

Remove any possibility of electricity ASAP - Battery

Dissemble as much as is possible (or wise)

Place bits on a dry clean insulating surface

Get out your hair dryer and select a gently warm setting - give it a few quick dries - don't let components get too hot

Have a look for any damaged components and replace if possible

Put it back together with a new battery

Hopefully it will last you as long as the car. - should be no ongoing corrosion unless water exists in case. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Well....
Put it back together yesterday, using original battery. It unlocked and locked the car ok. Didn't go out to start it.

Came home this afternoon and thought I'd go try it. This time it wouldn't unlock the car, none of the buttons working.

Unlocked it using my regular key. Left it in the house and went out to the now unlocked car with the spare key. It started the car fine, just won't lock it again 🤔

Will try a new battery. Failing that I'll maybe buy a replacement from : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-LAND-ROVER-...635-2958-0

Anybody used these or had aftermarket keys coded to the car by a locksmith / Timpsons type place? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

The keys have 2 completely separate parts as far as I can work out -

The immobiliser section of the key is a passive RFID tag which does not use the battery and is probably immune from being washed.

The lock/unlock section of the key is a radio transmitter which does use the battery - so it could be that there is still water in there, in which case remove the battery and leave somewhere warm for another week. Or the battery might be flat. Or the time it spent wet with the battery still in has caused damage to the PCB by electrolysis.
