Chips....yes I have seen 'Diagnose Dan' he is very good. See also 'Pine Hollow Diagnostics' also very good but too far away.

IanMetro ... I have received a reply from Landrover and they have offered some assistance to the garage ( Team Valley Landrover ) who have my vehicle.

You would not believe what this assistance was, and I quote " Send us the DTC's and we will interpret them for you"

You could not make it up. They were told the issue with the engine and the fact there were no codes.

I have left the car for a further week as they have people off with Covid.
Will not hide the identity of the garage anymore. Team Valley Landrover.

Hi, Faulty wiring loomin Fuel pump assembly and or temperature sensor in the tank. The tank sensor is on the same circuit as the engine sensor and fuel gauge and engine temperature gauge. ALso check the tank wiring loom near the prop-shaft, a known fault.

Very interesting points.
I didn't know there was a temperature sensor in the fuel tank, although I had it out a couple of years ago for wire connectors inside.
I will definitely pass that on to the garage on Monday.
Engine temperature sensor has been checked.

Another dismal update.

Garage has admitted defeat. Cannot find the fault and Landrover technical as much use as a chocolate watch.
I now have the car back home.
Although the wiring integrity was checked by the garage, I intend to purchase some good quality contact cleaner and go through as many connectors and plugs as I can find, including the ECU.
I was also considering sending the ECU to a specialist to have it checked over for any internal faults. this may not be that simple. I have contacted 2 such places today with information regarding the problem. Their reply includes the following "Please send use the trouble codes that have been logged".
Does no one read the information that has been sent. I specifically mentioned that there was no codes.

If anyone knows of somewhere that can diagnose and repair ECU's please let me know.

That seems the best idea.

I have found over a long career trying to solve other peoples (and my own) equipment failures, that sometimes with an intermittent or obscure problem, it is best to carry on using the device (with or without a workaround) until such time that something fails solidly, in a way that allows you to follow the symptoms normally. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I agree with you to a point. However it isn't an intermittent fault. It's there all the time but the ECU doesn't recognise the problem hence no codes.
Must admit I did feel sorry for the people at the garage, having to admit defeat like that. Then again, it has defeated all of us.
I don't use the car as a daily runaround so it's not a big issue at the moment. It's more embarrassment than anything else, sitting cranking the engine waiting for the plume of smoke.

Head above parapet time again. Have you had a readout of the live data fuel trims

I think that's where I'd headed is to scope the injectors , but you'd need a good engine to compare against. If you weren't so far 'up north' it would keep us both occupied for a morning. Since you get such a long crank it won't need anything fancy , just any old oscilloscope would do.

However, I would speculate that all it will tell you is that it is using a warm engine injection profile , not why.

Perhaps I should attempt to view them on mine .....

Team Valley Landrover have had a Pico scope on the injectors and various other items (not sure what). As they only do Landrover, l would expect them to have the required values. As I said, they can not find any errors. They have also had an auto electrician check out the wiring, again no problems.
Strangely enough car started better today but that could just be a fluke. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

I forgot to mention the glow plugs, they were replace about a year ago just because of age. New ones were tested recently, but they have nothing to do with the issue as they only come into operation at 0 deg temp.
Also have extra earth strap direct to starter mounting bolt.
