Evoque Si4 Engine Terminated

I came across this Evoque Si4 in our local JLR specialist yesterday.

The first photo shows some of the parts removed from the car, including the front subframe assembly, laid out under the lift, awaiting the time when they will be put back in place.

Why? The second photo shows the side of the engine. Note the hole that shouldn't be there.

The third photo shows the rod through the block on the other side of the engine!

The mechanics were not sure of how this had happened. One said that the engine had been starved of oil over a long time. Another claimed it had been driven through a flood too fast. It was acknowledged by them that the Si4 engine is generally pretty bullet-proof. Of course it was fitted to later FL2 petrol engined cars in several markets.

The replacement new engine was on a stand nearby, with some ancillaries already fitted. The alternator had received a knock out blow from the rod, hence the new one in it's box in the photos.

I wonder how many actually check oil, water, air pressure, & if keen, power steering, brake fluid between servicing.

The petrol engine is very nice. I have read that there are issues with the turbo if you are doing constant high stress acceleration with long term stress cracking from heating cooling cycles. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

People on here most likely do - but we are a self selecting group. Its the people who are not interested in car maintenance that both don't appear here and don't look under bonnet. Jules

That’s neat, punched a hole one side them decided to go back in and try the other side of the block, that must have been some noise whizzing around on the crank looking for a way out! Rolling with laughter Regards

Interesting picture, it looks like the small end of the conrod has punched its way out and is still attached to the crankshaft. Odd thing is the gudgeon pin isn't still in place in the conrod. I have seen similar a few times where the piston has split and thrown the rod but the gudgeon pin has still been in place. 2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

Indeed, made me wonder if the pin snapped leaving the piston in the bore and the rod just rattled around a bit knocking a few windows in the block……poor thing, scared of the dark.

Problem is if the pin snapped it doesn’t seem to have done much damage to the small end.

Odd one. Regards

David

Yesterday did a walk to the beach & back past a large vegi shop on a forced exercise walking route, a route I sometimes do to kill 2 birds with one stone.

At a petrol station, one I use, there was girl squatting down airing up her tyres, I did have to look! As I walked past I said to her, good to see someone actually looking after their tyres. She did seem to appreciate the comment & said they needed some air. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
