I had this happen to me on a Td5 Defender in lane 2 of the M5 many years ago.

Managed to get over to the hard shoulder (remember them) and turned off the ignition, engine carried on running.

Pulled the battery off, engine carried on running.

Highways agency guy told me afterwards, the way to stop it way to put it in top gear and drop the clutch to stall the engine. The one I was driving stopped after it ran out of oil

Oh well, you live and learn...

It was given back to Land Rover and they strapped a new turbo on it and we had it back a couple of days later. It ran fine after that for the next 3 months or so while we had it. Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

Update regarding the my freelander2 runaway condition, I stripped the engine down today and I found 1- blown turbo 2- 2 piston damage. I will rebuild the engine with new turbo hopefully it run fine again. Too much work to drop the engine down. 10 hrs. Oil cooler with filled with oil & diesel.

Easier said than done when the engine bay is full of smoke, the engine is revving its balls off and your expecting something to go bang any second.  Jules

To stop oil induced diesel runaway, all you need to do is cut a boost pipe, it doesn't matter which one. This will stop the fuel (getting to the engine), and stop the high pressure air at the same time.

The easiest pipe to get at quickly is the elbow pipe at the turbo exit, but this does require getting behind the RH front wheel with a suitable cutting implement.

Unfortunately the Freel 2 does show off its boost pipes like many vehicles do, so cutting a boost pipe quickly isn't easy.

I always keep a cheap retractable craft in the engine bay fuse box of a diesel engine vehicle for this very purpose, as you never know when a turbo compressor seal might fail, and stalling isn't always an option a manual, and impossible on an automatic. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Had this happen to me on a Spainish motorway when I was driving a Renault Trafic ,I managed to stop engine by blocking the air intake I was lucky as all I had to have fitted was a new turbo and an oil change 😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
