Why was the Freelander 2 Si4 not available in the UK?

I didn't know the Si4 existed until a few months ago, but I'm starting to get obsessed about it.

I suppose back in 2013 everybody in the UK was still in love with diesel. Heck, I even had a Rangie P38 dHSE back then. (A car whose acceleration was best described as glacial - until I chipped it, then it was just slow.)

It seems it the Si4 was available in America, South Africa, Australia and the Far East and a few were registered in Europe in 2017.

The EcoBoost 240bhp 2 litre Ford unit was mostly seen in the UK in Mondeo back then, as well as the Volvo XC60 and S60, Jaguar XF and Caterham.

The South African site below makes a lot of the Si4's thirst quoting 14l/100k (20 mpg) when LR were quoting 9l/100k (30mpg)

That doesn't look much different to the mpg on my i6.

Also, I can't see any performance figures for the Si4.

Interestingly I did see a link to a UK For Sale ad from 2015 which talked about brand new RHD Si4 'for export only'.

But I can't find it now

More mystery.

Anybody out there seen one?

So its slower to 62mph than the SD4 and with much poorer fuel consumption. Why would you want a Si4 ? Jules

I think that the Diesel Automatic, as in the SD4, suits the genuine LR Premium Feel of the FL2

To be fair, it is only 0.01 sec slower!

However, I think the key is that it is a petrol engine. For some of us, myself included, that is what we are used to and what we wish to drive. Some of us just don't want to drive diesel engined cars. And its nice to have the choice, too.

Each to their own, of course.

Tim

I've often wondered this too - ironically, nowadays the si4 engine would make a lot more sense for the FL2 as presumably it would be both Euro 6 and ULEZ emissions zone compliant?

Maybe but with 20 mpg.
CO2 output is going up from people swapping from diesel back to petrol. Jules

Indeed. Except when there isn't a choice in a few years time. Jules
