My FL2 started to rattle and then it just stopped altogether

Hi All,

I would appreciate some help with this problem if possible.

I was driving home the other day when not far from home I heard a awful rattling sound from the engine... As I was not far from home I thought I'd just make it back but just less than a mile from home the car engine stopped completely, I lost power steering but was able to roll the car over away from the traffic.

The recovery truck came and the mechanic tried to start the engine again but there was no sign of life except for a click. After getting the car back home I looked at the battery positive terminal where the power cable goes straight to the starter motor and that was blown (see picture below)







After speaking to a mate that knows someone who is a mechanic and works on more modern cars he advised me to replace the starter motor and that power cable to the starter motor.

Unfortunately, that hasn't worked because when I went to start the engine after replacing these two items the car just gave ba big cluncking sound (starter motor trying to start the engine) and nothing else happened......

The mechanic is really baffled by this because he says the FL2 engine hardly ever fails so is a bit stumped as to what is wrong...

Sounds like the engine has seized or the timing belt has broken. The starter cable has failed due to excessive current draw caused by the starter trying to turn over a seized engine. (it is designed to "blow" at the point it has) You would have to confirm/eliminate this by trying to turn the engine over by hand with a socket on the crankshaft or by removing the starter then trying to turn the flywheel with a screwdriver on the ring gear teeth. If you drop the oil out the car you might find metal fragments in the oil if something terminal has happened! Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Forgot to say the cambelt had been changed at 77000 miles by a LR garage so I can't see that happening but you never know I suppose.....



I've got my mates mechanic to come and look at it soon I hope but I'm not holding my breath for a good outcome TBH....

I was hoping that I may get a bit of a heads up as to what it might be by asking the question on here. Kind regards.

The same thing happened when a lost nut got sucked into the engine on my car. I found the nut on top of one of the pistons when I took the head off. The fuseable link to the starter motor had also blown like yours has. I’m guessing that in your case something has been sucked into the motor and would back the swirl flaps theory suggested.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

The car is going to a LR specialist garage today and they will do a diagnostic check on it to see what that throws up although I'm not holding out much hope that it'll be an easy (or cheap) fix!

I've been looking online for prices of reconditioned engines etc and it is scaring the life out of me....

I should have kept my Toyota Rav4 methinks....... Kind regards.

Apparently the timing belt had slipped off the teeth on the pulley which is basically the same as snapping....

I'm still struggling in my head about what I'm going to do with the car if I'm honest as the prices that have been given me is just far more than I had envisaged....... Kind regards.

Sorry to hear that I am not sure what your being quoted, but if it was me my first step would be to remove the cylinder head and assertain exactly the extend of the internal damage before deciding the best course of action. It may just have bent the valves, or it may have damaged the pistons as well depends on the engine speed at the time of the failure, however, trying to start the vehicle after it stopped may have caused further damage.

It's not the end of the world.
Head off, replace bent valves, head back on, fit new timing belt assembly, job done.
It's a good few hours work (it took me about 15 hours to replace my damaged head earlier this month), which any decent garage should be able to do. It doesn't need to be an LR garage, as the engine is from PSA. Thumbs Up Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.
