Has anybody had to change their auxiliary belt, which is supposed to be done at 105,000 miles?

I did it myself, took a few hours. Didn't have to drain any fluids or re-align the AC compressor since it's mount doesn't need to be removed.

I'd definitely replace the tensioner and idler pulley while you're in there. Maybe also replace the water pump, although mine lasted 150k miles before I replaced it on a preventative basis.

Hardest part was getting the PS drive coupler back on the water pump right, the PS pump has a spring coupler with a 90-degree end that has to fit into a a matching hole on the water pump. I didn't know exactly how it was supposed to go, but fumbled through it. The coupler might remain attached to either the water pump or the PS pump. I think you can leave the coupler bolts on the PS pump and pull it away, which will cause the coupler to disconnect from the water pump.

Thorough PS pump tutorial here, check out the pic of the coupler. You'll note that on the water pump side there's a groove around the circumference which leads to the hole that spring end goes in... I believe this groove is intended to feed the spring end into the hole when the assembly is rotated... that's how I was able to get it in. If the PS end comes off, then you have to manually insert the spring into the respective hole on that assembly.

I have a receipt somewhere from when mine was done.I suspect it cost me more because the belt went whilst I was on holiday and after an 8 hour wait at the side of the road, the RAC eventually took my Freelander to one of their "approved" dealers 20 miles from where I was.
IIRC, the parts were around £65, but they charged 3 hours labour. Sure it was around the £275 mark.
Also, while you're at it, check the vacuum pump seal for leaks. That cost me around £60 to do as I could only get the gasket from the USA at the time (even Volvo didn't carry the gasket ) and the postage cost me nearly as much again. as the gasket. They're now available on Ebay pretty cheap. Well worth doing.

It's not surprising that a lot of the knowledge on the i6 and it's-Ford assembled Volvo engine, comes from the States.

AutoTrader UK has 1,019 Freelander 2 for sale today, only 11 are petrol i6 and 3 of them are Japanese imports!

Mind you, the TD4 is a Citroen/PSA unit.

Can't remember off hand, just that I was in Watchet and the i6 was taken to a garage in Wellington, near Taunton.

I'm sure the job can be done by any competent mechanic.

It's a restricted, fiddly job, but it's not impossible.

I wonder if that's reason you see i6 at around 100,000 miles – and then nothing until 130,000 plus

I reckon poeple bite the bullet at 105,000 (when it's supposed to be done) and then hang on to them for a while.

To answer your question --> How Long Does It Take?

About 4 hours the first time

About 2 hours the second time
(when you hear the spring clicking because you did not seat it properly and you get to do it again)
Note: the spring turns the water pump and it is driven by the power steering pump

In fact there are so few i6 in the UK that people have started importing them from Japan.

The si6 was also sold in Canada. I believe the US/Canada versions are identical. I don't see many on the road in Ontario but there are a few still going strong.

And yes, this forum is a great resource, very helpful members and tons of info. And, p_gill is legendary !
