United States 2008 Freelander 2 i6 SE Auto Tambora Flame

Motion,

Thanks for saying that. My LR2 is my first Land Rover and I want it to run forever.

Alan,

The LR2 was a sales disappointment in the US it sold fewer units than the Range Rover
(my friends call it an unintentional exotic......which is true)

The interesting thing is that even fewer unit sold in Canada.

US Sales 2008 - 2012 about 18,000 https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/land-rover-r...s-figures/

However if you want Tambora Flame it only came in 2008 and the number of LR2s in this color is very few.

Full disclosure I like the 3.2 so much that I bought my son a used Volvo S80 3.2

One important point in the US (Canada as well I believe) we didn't get the diesel option.
I can't say that the 3.2 is better than the diesel because I've never driven the diesel.
But I can say that I am very impressed by the 3.2.

One last thought. If your overdrive pulley still works I wouldn't replace it. To test it: engine off, try to move the Aux Belt at the AC compressor (if it moves easily in one direction and not in the opposite direction then it works as designed, when mine failed it was locked and it would not move in either direction)

Take care

Paul

Hi Paul,

Interesting to hear the information on the LR2 in North America.

The first generation Freelander sold over 500,000 worldwide and was regarded as the car that saved Land Rover.

The LR2, although a much better car, only made just over 300,000. Perhaps due to much greater competition in the SUV market.

Most LR2 in the the UK are diesel, largely because Europe went mad for diesels, right up until VW Dieselgate.

That's why in the UK, most Volvo S80 are diesel and I can only see one with a petrol 3.2. (mind you, there's also a V8 which looks interesting Smile

I've driven a couple of LR2 190hp SD4 and they perform well. My reason for buying an i6 is that I don't like 4 cylinder engines and London now has an ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) and more UK cities are following suit.

Thanks again for your help and knowledge Paul – I'll let you know how I get on!

Thumbs Up

Ah, apparently there were a few more FL's made altogether:

On 3 Oct 2014 the final FL2 came off the production line. Cars were still available in UK dealers to the end of 2014 as MY 2015.

In total 443,957 FL2s were built. FL Metropolis was the last hi-spec model in UK.

That info came from the James Taylor book.

TF is what we have, and it's part of the reason I'm keeping it. There's another TF LR2 in our neighborhood.

Likewise, plenty of power. It tows really well even in mountains, with a 3500# trailer and a full cabin. Only time it slows down is in summer heat at high elevations on a steep climb but I'd probably need a big turbo V8 to avoid that. By mountains, I mean Sierra Nevadas and Rockies.

I don't think any of the diesel options would work as well for towing in mountains (not that we have the option here).

Still going strong at 150K, although I'm about to do a DIY compression check and borescope of the cylinders... I'm planning on having some paint and body work done and wanted to be sure the engine is solid before I invest in that.

Alan,

I didn't really like the look of the wheels for my LR2 or S80 so I fixed that.

Note: originally these wheels came on an XC60

Paul

Looks good on either vehicle. The one thing I don't like are black alloy wheels.

To me, they kill a cars look.

regards
