Hi,

Recently my manual 07 freelander has started making a horrible noise from the back when taking sharp corners at low speeds and setting off turning at junctions. It can also be heard occasionally when accelerating hard but not as loud. It’s like a creaky door. I was wondering if it could be uj related but after doing some reading I’m thinking it maybe the dreaded haldex. It is more frequent when in a terrain response mode. There are no warnings on the dash however. I’ve attached a link to a video of it. If any of you chaps could shed some light on this it would be much appreciated!

Broken rear coil spring possibly? I've had this sound before (not in a freelander) and the coil spring had snapped at the top end, the sound was the broken ends rubbing against each other. It was impossible to see it until you jacked the vehicle up. Bouncing the rear end up and down also made it make the noise so that might help localise it to either suspension or transmission.

Badly failed CV joint ?
You'd expect a broken spring to be noisy only when the body was moving up and down, not turning on a flat surface. Plus a difference in ride height if part of the spring had displaced. Jules

Try bouncing up and down in the boot and rocking the car. If it makes the noise when stationary then a spring most likley.

Then try pulling out the haldex fuse or unplugging the haldex control box underneath. This will disconnect the propshaft from the rear diff. If the sound goes away then its a haldex.

Your symptoms are very characteristic of locking haldex. Have you had it serviced ? A proper haldex service - new fluid , new disposable filter and removal/clean of pump filter maty solve the problem. Though main dealer may try and sell you a replacement haldex if it turns out to be that. Jules

Hi, a word of warning, we had a noisy back end on our 2009 FL2. It also chirped a bit and the clutch appeared to slip at times. It also jumped around a bit on left hand corners. It cost us a new diff assy, and a new Bevel Box. The Haldex was also suspect, Bloody Expensive too.

I changed the haldex pump, oil, filters solenoids and so far so good. It has cured the creaking and I’ve been driving it for a couple of months now with no problems
