Broken rear coil spring possibly? I've had this sound before (not in a freelander) and the coil spring had snapped at the top end, the sound was the broken ends rubbing against each other. It was impossible to see it until you jacked the vehicle up. Bouncing the rear end up and down also made it make the noise so that might help localise it to either suspension or transmission. |

Try bouncing up and down in the boot and rocking the car. If it makes the noise when stationary then a spring most likley.

I agree, but it was snapped right at the top so there was no noticeable drop in height and it made creaking noises at unexpected times. But definitely bouncing the back end up and down by pushing on the boot floor would tell you. |

Hi, a word of warning, we had a noisy back end on our 2009 FL2. It also chirped a bit and the clutch appeared to slip at times. It also jumped around a bit on left hand corners. It cost us a new diff assy, and a new Bevel Box. The Haldex was also suspect, Bloody Expensive too. |
