I just wanted share with all the dog owners on here, the terrible experience we are going through at the moment with one of our border Collies. He is 12 years old but quite fit and well, as we always have he went for his annual vaccinations. Within 3 days the site of the injection suddenly swelled to a lump bigger that my hand with my fingers spread out, we rushed him back to the vets and they stated he had, had a violent reaction to the drugs and started treating him. over the weekend this lump erupted in two places leaking fluid leaving him with gapping open wounds. it had started to destroy his skin. He was operated on today and we hope he will recover fully.

We have since learned this is not uncommon nowadays and many vets are saying not to vaccinate older dogs because of this. Our vet is taking this up with the drugs supplier to recover their cost ? I have photo's of my poor old boy's injury's but think they are too horrific to post on an open forum. So please, if you have an older dog due his vaccinations please raise this issue with your vet first. My Beagle is 15 1/2 now and to be honest I've not had him vaccinated for a few years now - keep meaning to do so, but he's in fine form and not having any ailments apart from arthritis in his paws.
Reading this rather puts me off taking him in for a jab.

Whilst this was clearly an awful complication of a veterinary medication, lets research some actual facts first before we make decisions which may be detrimental. Jules

Here is my boy after todays surgery after the dead and dying flesh was removed. I will just add, it's your pet and you must do what you feel is best for them. and obviously speak to your Vet. I just wanted to share what has happened to our poor old boy.

So sorry to hear this. Hoping Milo (I guess that's his name) makes a full recovery

Collies are extremely susceptible to certain drugs… we have three and do not re vaccinate after their original jabs as pups…

You also cannot use Spot On or Frontline on them as a treatment for fleas. You have to use Bravecto which works in a different way..

Hope he makes a full recovery!

Hi I hope Sparkey recovers after his ordeal I would be interested in knowing what the drug that caused this as one of my greyhounds, I have three retired greys, is due to have his boosters later this month so I would like to check on his previous boosters to see if he has had this drug before.
I have had retired greyhounds for over 20 years now and never had a problem with any vaccinations in the past, but like Farmer Chalk mentioned about flea treatments a couple of mine were adverse to Frontline so I had to find an alternative.
I have often spoken to the vets about older dogs having boosters but obviously it's money as far as they are concerned but personally I cannot see the point of boostersafter a certain age because they must surely be immune after having them every year for so long.

Hi, sparky is recovering well, the 5 drains were taken out on Monday and hopefully the stiches come out next week thank you for asking. I'm happy to let you know the drug in question but not on the open forum. if you PM me I'll reply with the information you want.
