Reading this subject I’m now doubting what I did …. Both me and the Mrs have a FL2 and I have done the cambelt and pump on both, the first one around three years ago then one last year on the later one . I did put a very light smear of gasket sealer on the mating surface on both occasions “just to be sure it wouldn’t leak”….Only last week the mrs said coolant low message had come on and I just thought maybe due to the rather hot temperatures we’ve had it just needed a very small top up .
Next week we’re doing a 500 mile round trip so yesterday I set to and changed the oil ,filters and fuel filter and to my horror noticed a pink residue line running down from the coolant pump area and a wet dew drop about to drip off , so I do have a coolant leak and pretty sure it’s going to be the pump, so looks like another cam belt change with a new pump job to do again . When I do it I’ll take pics and share what I find but I’m now thinking I ruined the gasket with the sealant ….

Tigertim, as Grimdog states above, the engine block coolant drain is an integral part of the pump assembly, have you checked that it's not leaking from that?

Thanks for that info I will remove the covers for a closer look before I buy another kit ….

As mentioned, I am supporting the theory that there is a thin NBR coating on the black metal gasket, or some kind of heat activated sealant which is seen on some head gasket shims. That means that it should be mounted dry.

If you look at this production wize, fitting a dry gasket would be a lot more time saving on a production line than fiddling with RTV sealant.

The two above supports the idea of fitting it dry.

In view if the above comments I thought I'd check inside the box of my Gates Cambelt kit (KP25633XS). It has a metal gasket with a black coating.
No instructions are included so I went to the Gates website.
Its a complete PITA- You have to register and then insert a ridiculous 30 digit code every time you wish to gain access to the instructions.
But it turned out to be not only time consuming but also a complete waste of time !!
The only instructions pertaining to this kit are for the removal of the camshaft CHAIN and camshafts themselves. Nothing whatsoever about the actual timing belt/waterpump/pulleys kit.
So thanks Gates - that was as much use as a chocolate teapot.

I have searched on-line but can find no installation instructions for this Gates kit.
Anyone been successful ?

Found that one a few days ago. Another conflicting advice as the LR workshop manual do not mention any RTV sealer and the Haynes manual the same....

I have the solution. Monday Wednesday Friday fit it dry, Tuesday Thursday put some sealant on. Saturday and Sunday put sealant on the outer face only.
