I've seen this statement before. Me too I will like to know why people say this?

to try and prevent car cloneing etc , yes thieves can walk around a car park and find your vin number but why make it east for them?

Some people dont like showing their number plate either, but I'm not bothered its not exactly top secret At work

Why not make it west for them as well Laughing

The main reason for not advertising your number plate is because it is possible to send a SMS to a certain number with the reg-number and the automatic reply will tell you who the owner is and home town. A quick check in the telefon catalogue will give you the exact address of that person. At least that's how it works in Norway.
I tried this out earlier when Viking first showed us some photographs of his Freely with number plate showing and now I know his exact name, telephone number and address (if ever I should need it Laughing ). 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Baltic Blue

My car is in the workshop at the moment.
This noise, which others have described, became frequent and accompanied by very jerky and irregular gearchanges.
Dealer is investigating....

I asked about this Service Action Q059 as my car is within the VIN range.
Was told this is not applicable to UK cars.
I don't understand why this should be. Any suggestions?

I am bringing back this topic because some new info.
The sound that sometimes you hear when the gears are changed is not comming from the automatic gearbox, but from the engine itself.
On gear change from 1 to 2 (and less from 2 to 3), when transmission's demultiplication ratio is big, in order to shift smoothly, without any shudder, the engine's ECU modifies the injection's advance timming and injected fuel quantity, exactly in the moment when auto gearbox changes gears.
Without this, even if there is a torque converter, which should dampen a little the gears' change, the engine torque is still big and therefore, to prevent shudder, through injection's timming advance and injected fuel quantity modifications, the torque is lowered.
The sound is made by the engine itself, by the diesel burning process, process which is altered by these modifications (different maps for timming and fuel quantity).
So it seems that it is a characteristic of the car after all...
You saw that on very slow or very hard accelerations that sound is not heard.
That's because on those cases there is no need to alter the injection timming and fuel quantity: on slow acceleration there is little torque transmited to powerdrive and shudder is less probable to appear because the torque converter is enough to make the change smootly, when on hard acceleration there is a need of a quick change and max torque, so shudder is the least of concerns.

Cyprus 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Auto Alaska White

Sorry for the late feedback guys!
In March I was informed that the torque converter was at fault and that they would replace for me the gearbox and the torque converter! I was not very pleased with that as I bought a new car so that I would avoid maintenance work done by local mechanics but what else could I do.
After I took it in (a month later when parts arrived), I called in the evening to check on the progress only to find out that the so called "recall" they had was recalled by LR as a no solution! Luckily I avoided the replacement of the gearbox but I still have the noise.
That was back in June and I was told to wait until they had a better picture about the problem. In September, they brought in a technician from UK whom we took on a test drive in my car. He heard the noise which he had "never" heard before and was puzzled by it. We took it back to the dealer and checked the computer for any signals and of course there was nothing there. He promised that he would discuss it with technicians in UK and let me know. About a month after that, I was given their official response which is "It is a characteristic of the vehicle!".
This is of course ridiculous for a number of reasons.
1. The noise was not there when I first bought the car and it appeared about 4-5 months after I bought it.
2. The noise is louder and more frequent depending on weather conditions and driving.
3. If the car is being driven for a while, that noise becomes more pronounced and prolonged.
4. Not all vehicles do the same noise.

I am going to pursue this further as I believe it is not properly handled. I have had to take my car in numerous times up to now for various issues and although they are being helpful to the extent they can, I bought a brand new car so that I would avoid any costs and hussles hidden in a used vehicle but instead...

1. Adaptive lighting failure - replaced by recall after it was taken in 3-4 times for the same problem and they were "reprogramming"
2. power driver seat burning fuse - this problem appeared first week after I bought it. replaced motors, problem persisted, found after it was taken in for 5th time for the same problem that some wires were not insulated properly
3. driver seat rocking - replaced the seat base and the problem is now worse. I am supposed to take it in again tomorrow to get a final fix.
4. power lock failure. - the lock on the driver seat failed. That resulted in the remote lock not functioning never realized until accidentally opened door before unlocking the car! Lovely! took it in twice for the same issue as in the first time they could not pinpoint the problem as it was not consistent.
5. power steering failing - they replaced the power steering pump (that's what I was told). needless to say that a new sound appeared after that. Now I am used to it. I still notice that after driving for a while on roads with many bends, the power steering get progressively heavier.
6. the leather steering wheel frailing - was told that i could get it replaced as it is a known issue.
7. dashboard beginning to show the "line" around the passenger airbag. My car has been 80% of the time in the shade! Yes Cyprus is hot but the car has been touted as being tested in extreme conditions.
8. aircondition makes some fan noise on the passenger side. - was told that it is a big hussle to get it fixed as it involves taking apart the dashboard! Not sure if I want them to do it.

I think I am missing a few other issues but I think my brain is to block some issues for my sake.
Sorry for the long note but I think it is good for all of us to be aware of such issues.
