Anyone looking to go bigger?

Anyone looking to go from Freelander 2 to Disco 3?
I have an itch for a Freelander 2, it’s probs the only model Landrover I’ve not owned so far

2 previous owners, 62,000 miles, auto, never towed, belts recently, SE model, pretty much A1

Wanted to buy a D3 or D4 to replace my D2 but reliability issues and eye watering prices to fix them meant that head ruled heart and I went for a Fl2. Seems to have been a good choice but I do still lust after a late model D4! 😁 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black

i went from FL2 LE Sport to Discovery 4 XS, got it for a good price, spent a load on it with maintenance and bolt on mods, then Covid stopped me from enjoying it as much as i wanted.
With restrictions and working from home looking to carry on for a while yet i stripped and sold the D4 and im now back in a FL2 HSE Lux.

i dont regret the D4 and the money spent on it at all, it was on my bucket list to own one and ive done that now. The D3/D4 is truly unmatched in its all round versatility. It really is the best 4x4 you can buy.... but you need quite deep pockets to keep them long term.

I did the same as you D2 to FL2.

I think the D4 would have been a better bet than the D3 in terms of reliability.
My understanding the D3, and to a lesser except the D4, was beset with hard to diagnose electrical faults.

In fact in all the years I had early Discos (200Tdi/300TDI/TD5) I never had any electrical issues - it was just replacing mechanical things. So much more DIY-able than D3/D4. Jules

I nearly bought two D3’s before I got my FL2. First one, they wouldn’t knock anything off for a broken electronic handbrake mechanism. Second one wouldn’t even knock off £75 (or fix) a cracked heated fronts screen so I walked away from both. Don’t regret it because they would have probably been expensive to run, expensive to tax and expensive to fix and I’m in the motor trade! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

I’ve had Discoveries from 1990, my first, which was a V8 petrol , to 2011. With a new one every three years. Also had many Defenders & Series Landrovers. Loved the Discos, loved the Defenders. Still have one of each. May even end up with a hat trick, again.

Having had both a D3 and still have the Freel2, I would say while the D3 an absolutely brilliant vehicle, it is much more expensive to run and maintain, which is why I'd be very cautious about getting another D3. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Like so many others I considered a D3 or D4 as been a long time fan of Discoveries (not so much with the 5 sadly) but the running costs steered me towards the Freelander 2 and I don't regret at all.
A mate who bought a D4 (similar age as my F2 but higher miles) confirmed for me I did the right thing as he has had so many issues with his (the usual ones; handbrake module, leaking intake manifold, suspension bushes etc) not to mention the ever present fear of the dreaded Crank failure - rare or not still would have kept me awake at times I'm sure.
Not to say I don't still love the D3/4 - just not the thought of paying to run one myself. Andrew

i has an rrs which was basically a d3 , took it from 20000 to 80000 miles

with one egr blockage, one roll bar bush and 1 electric handbrake fault, I brake caliper

hand brake worked fine but with a constant warning light, £100 fix, roll bar was approx 100. egr nearer 400, caliper 200ish

lovely motor, but swapped it as thought 80000miles was plenty enough, also needed 4 tyres and 4 set of brakes at the time.

the refinement improved with age, mainly because I wore away the horrible noisy wranglers and fitted pirellis, was like a new car on the new tyres At work

Update;
Having spent a fair amount of time considering changing the D3 for a Freelander 2, I went to my local, well respected & trusted Landie specialist yesterday. I’ve known them for ages. What they don’t know, Landie-wise, isn’t really worth knowing anyway.
I was taking my Defender for an MOT & casually mentioned the fact that I was perving a Freelander 2 rather than my D3. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that I was going down the wrong road.
So, looks like the D3 will be staying.

Apart from consumables and routine servicing, which I do myself, in 3 1/2 years and 64000 miles my Freelander has needed 2 tail gate switches and 1 intercooler hose. Which I think is pretty good. I have no doubt a D3 or 4 would have required considerably more expenditure. 🤔 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
