Wanted to buy a D3 or D4 to replace my D2 but reliability issues and eye watering prices to fix them meant that head ruled heart and I went for a Fl2. Seems to have been a good choice but I do still lust after a late model D4! 😁 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

i went from FL2 LE Sport to Discovery 4 XS, got it for a good price, spent a load on it with maintenance and bolt on mods, then Covid stopped me from enjoying it as much as i wanted.

I did the same as you D2 to FL2. I think the D4 would have been a better bet than the D3 in terms of reliability. My understanding the D3, and to a lesser except the D4, was beset with hard to diagnose electrical faults. In fact in all the years I had early Discos (200Tdi/300TDI/TD5) I never had any electrical issues - it was just replacing mechanical things. So much more DIY-able than D3/D4. Jules |

I nearly bought two D3’s before I got my FL2. First one, they wouldn’t knock anything off for a broken electronic handbrake mechanism. Second one wouldn’t even knock off £75 (or fix) a cracked heated fronts screen so I walked away from both. Don’t regret it because they would have probably been expensive to run, expensive to tax and expensive to fix and I’m in the motor trade! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I’ve had Discoveries from 1990, my first, which was a V8 petrol , to 2011. With a new one every three years. Also had many Defenders & Series Landrovers. Loved the Discos, loved the Defenders. Still have one of each. May even end up with a hat trick, again. |

Having had both a D3 and still have the Freel2, I would say while the D3 an absolutely brilliant vehicle, it is much more expensive to run and maintain, which is why I'd be very cautious about getting another D3. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I think it’s very much a case of “whatever blows your skirt up”. |

Like so many others I considered a D3 or D4 as been a long time fan of Discoveries (not so much with the 5 sadly) but the running costs steered me towards the Freelander 2 and I don't regret at all.

Apart from consumables and routine servicing, which I do myself, in 3 1/2 years and 64000 miles my Freelander has needed 2 tail gate switches and 1 intercooler hose. Which I think is pretty good. I have no doubt a D3 or 4 would have required considerably more expenditure. 🤔 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
