I copied one of my previous posts ---- I hope this helps ---

After 6 years and 50k miles I decided to fit some new tyres. MOT had signalled only 3+mm on 2 tyres and I had about 4+mm on the other two fitted, (and another damaged - see below in my garage)

The mileage was helped by using all 5 tyres that had been supplied in rotation, although one had to be retired early due to cut in wall. (I have a 6th wheel which I use as a spare)

As winter was coming on I decided on Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres 235/55 R19 105V (Volvo, Extra Load, All Season)
I chose these V rating as they had a very good record for wet grip, and reasonable noise and MPG figures.

In Somerset we have far more rain than snow in winter, and these tyres, with multiple groves and sipes in tread pattern, should shift the water on the road.

The price for 4 was £550(fitted, balanced, valves etc), which I thought was reasonable.

You can pay more for internal foam in these tyres to cut noise further, but I thought that these tyres were quieter on my run home, steering was certainly lighter and more direct.

Just fitted Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons SUV all round.

These are top rated for snow grip.

Just wondering why you wouldn't touch Pirelli tyres with a barge pole as ones on my FL2 have not caused me any issues?

thats why all season tyres (as TooBlue has done ) or swapping summer and winter tyre sets is a good idea

the getting going is good but I am more bothered about the stopping which is better with the correct tyre for a given situation

My Pirelli Zeros Are marked M+S and as you can see have lots of sipes to disperse water and trap snow.

They are marked All Season, so I take it they have a higher rubber content to deal with the cold.

They are designed primarily as original fit for Volvo SUVs, and mine are sidewall marked VOL.

The review that I used to choose them gave better than average noise figures, and I have found them quieter than my previous (worn!) Contis.

A couple of quotes to explain what makes a good Winter Tyre.

Winter tyres also have thousands of tiny grooves (known as sipes) in their tread blocks which are used to disperse water and prevent aquaplaning. These grooves bite into the snow, slush and ice, providing optimal grip with the road. They also have a deep tread pattern. This provides a cavity for snow.

Winter/cold-weather tyres contain more natural rubber than regular tyres, and are constructed from a softer compound. This allows them to stay supple as temperatures drop below 7 degrees C in conditions where a normal tyre becomes hard and less keyed-in to the asphalt.

Had the Cross Climate tyres fitted this morning and early indications are a more positive response and much quieter than the Pirelli Scorpio Zeros but to be fair they were 26k in. As mentioned above ATS have a £50 off deal for 4 tyres plus you get a further 10% for booking on line. We'll pleased paying just £488 inclusive of balancing, valves and disposal.  MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

From the comments on most of these tyre threads/posts, I do wonder if we all experience the fact that new tyres with lots of tread are quieter, than worn tyres with little tread.

And they work and handle a lot better.

Have decided to go for Pirelli Verde Allseasons Landrover approved.
Although i have no idea the difference between LR approved and normal Verde all seasons.
Bit of haggling but have got the tyre co down to £485 fitted.
Coming next week. Could have waited but SWMBO said "get them fitted" who knows what shortages we are going to face this winter.
