Craig,

I completely agree with your approach

Get out in front of the maintenance


Here is the Alternator on my S80 with the 3.2

Note: the X in the part number indicates a factory rebuild (If I ever replace my LR2 alternator I will get one of these)




If you only want to replace the coupler and the clutched pulley you will need special tools to remove and replace

You will need to use this tool on the pulley for the serpentine belt

PS For your environment I expect that the clutch has seized, I would check the pulley on the serpentine belt because its easier to test, if you push on the belt it should move in one direction and not in the other (The alternator is harder to test)

thank you, i bought a nice 2012 LR2 , radiator needs replaced so its wise to change thermostat ,hoses ,basically anything that has access after intake is removed, most of which is covered in this post, p gill you are a wellspring of information, with your experience what spark plugs are best for this engine?

Copied from another post I wrote


I recommend using the Denso Iridium Spark Plugs


Note: I change the spark-plugs every 50,000 miles

Any of these will work well

Don't adjust the Gap run them with the factory gap

3421 - Stock Iridium plug

5344 - Iridium power (I've been running these)

3459 - SIP Iridium (This is what Volvo used for the last of the 3.2s)

4704 - Iridium TT (Similar to SIP but less expensive, I will switch to these next)

The Heavy Duty fan has two fans instead of one.

The advantage is redundancy and better cooling at low speed. (think off road driving)

I own a S80 and a LR2 so when my LR2 fan died I bought a fan for a S80 with the dual fan setup.

It seems to work fine.

In my case the risk was low because I could remove the fan and keep it for the day that my S80 needed a fan.

It was a direct plug in replacement.

I can’t be 100% sure that the fan works exactly as Land Rover intended but I think it is unlikely that the Maximum setting is really different for the single fan and the dual Fan. (The low and medium setting may be different and not optimized)

I just checked my S80 and LR2

HVAC turned off for both.

Both vehicles turned on at the same time.

2010 S80 3.2 came with dual fan from Volvo currently has an aftermarket VDO dual fan

2008 LR2 3.2 came with single fan from Land Rover currently has a genuine Volvo S80 dual fan

Both engines started within 1 minute

The LR2 fan did turn on for the first minute but the Volvo fan didn’t (unless I missed it)

After the first minute both vehicles fans stayed off for 35 minutes

Outside temperature is 65 F

After 35 minutes both vehicles ran the fan for about 1 minute every 5 minutes

The fan was not full speed (it was too quiet)

Both fans spun on both vehicles




Based on this I am confident that the dual fan for a S80 will be fine on my LR2


And I am very happy with the upgrade

Thanks Paul, great info as usual.....this will be my summer pro-active dual fan upgrade project. Along, of course, with drilling a pilot hole in my blower fan.....I want to do this right now but it's too damn cold even in the garage!!! Laughing

i didnt have much luck searching radiator removal , its a rather massive project for a vehicle we just bought, 2012 lr2 and of coarse intake has to come out , so it made sense to replace everything, how it looks is that im going to have to unbolt a/c compressor and sat it aside with lines still connected to get radiator out? would this be a correct assumption?

I posted some pictures of my radiator for my S80.

I am running a S80 Dual Fan on my LR2 and the AC condenser is interchangeable between the LR2 and S80.

The way to think about is is this: the Radiator is mounted to the vehicle and the Condenser and Fan are clipped onto the radiator using plastic clips.

Note: to free my AC Condenser from the broken radiator I did snap off the plastic clips on the old radiator.
