Engine bay wiring loom check

I came across this youtube video today ....

Seems there was a problem on early FL2 engine compartment wiring, where the air box inlet pipe was rubbing at the loom ..... so much the wires became bare.

I have checked mine, it had been fitted with a plastic convoluted sleeve, instead of tape-wrapped loom, as shown in video.

The guy does waffle on a bit BUT what he found may be of interest ??

Thats not the only place it can chaff on that wire, it can happen a bit further up as well.

Need to check that bit under the air filter now though.

Just my input on the video but all the FL2s I’ve seen have corrugated reinforcing over that part of the loom, would be interested to hear if anyone else has that or not. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Something to consider if you have electrical issues

Came across this on another thread

I took my air filter box out and sure enough there was evidence of wear on the main harness underneath the box; as it crosses a ridge between adjacent body panels the air box can press down it. In the spirit of preventative maintenance I wrapped the main harness and the smaller one nearby in plastic spiral cable tidy.

There are also 5 earth points under the box too - they had some surface rust so I loosened and tightened the bolts and then use spray grease to reduce further corrosion. Jules

Definitely worth a reminder - I had thought I had read that the later FL2's didn't suffer from this but I see yours is a 2014 same as mine so I'll have a look & see next time I'm under the bonnet Thumbs Up 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

Jules,

As the FREEL2 gets older we need focus on "Wear Out" or "End of Life" failure modes.

When the FREEL2 was younger Manufacturing Defects and Infant Mortality were the primary concerns but not any more.

You are 100% correct to post this video

I want the useful life of my FREEL2 to exceed 50 years (I expect it to out live me)

Take care

All the FL2s I’ve ever seen have the wiring in that area protected with corrugated armour. Perhaps this was only an issue on very early models. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Thanks for that I will have a look as I have been on +5K of corrugated roads.

On my Peugeot 504 old wires rubbed & smoldering started just as I parked the car. Managed to put it out, had a fire extinguisher, but it was an eye opener as to how quickly things can go wrong. One really needs a large set of parrot wire cutters to cut power as quick as possible.

I have seen a car go up in flames from an electrical fault. After a minute it is basically too late. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

From the video the Corrugated protection ends and the damage is above that point.
