I sorned a car last April and it still showed up as insured. Oddly enough, my mate borrowed it for a month when his car was nicked. He taxed and insured it separately and re-sorned it when he was finished with it a couple of months ago. It showed up as sorned within a day or so on the tax site but it’s STILL showing as insured on the MID. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

SORN is only related to the RFL not Insurance or MOT. |

No I am not saying there is another database, I said the Insurance companies do not use the ANPR system to check vehicles, it’s the responsibility of the police to do that, the insurance companies can check when you renew your insurance against the database to see if you’ve been naughty. Exactly this, I sorned the FL2 last March but didn’t cancel the insurance just in case it burst into flames on the drive, there is no requirement to keep the vehicle insured UNLESS it is on the public highway (ie not on private land). It would be a bit daft not to keep it insured unless it was safely tucked away in a secured locked garage, and even then there would be no cover for accidental damage from fire or some such. I know. Both people that have insured it, sorned it after they cancelled the insurance. Both had their RFL refund but it’s a mystery as to who is insuring it now. One was on a motor traders policy which was cancelled last year and one was a friend who cancelled and transferred his insurance to his new vehicle.
