I know you have to remove the starter to lock the flywheel when tightening the front pulley bolt but I can’t remember whether you can get the timing pin tool into the flywheel with the starter still in. It’s not too terrible to remove the starter though. Unless your belt is particularly loose, it is very unusual for a cam belt to jump a tooth or two without stripping the belt. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Adding with the starter removed you can see where the timing hole is in the flywheel. Although I removed the starter I had to use a handled/angled mirror to initially find the hole. |

When you say oil in the cylinders, I assume you are referring to unburnt diesel?
