Hi, I've just purchased a 2007 3.2l petrol.

I know the recommended spec is 0w-30 for oil, but that seems to be a cold weather viscosity. Do you guys still use that weight over summer, or go with the easier to find 5w-30 or 5w-40?

Also, heard the haldex is touchy. My car has done 80 thou kms. worth replacing fluids now, and where do you get the stuiff?

Most of FREEL2 are diesel owners.

I own two 3.2s (same engine in both)

2008 LR2 3.2
2010 S80 3.2

It's warm where I live (typically it doesn't get below 0 C)

Use a quality full synthetic motor oil.

0w30 - sure
5w30 - absolutely
5W40 - no problem

I am running 5W30 right now.

You may or may not want to get a haldex O Ring LR002888... mine was fine and they didn't need a replacement, so got one here if you need it.
Lot of places in NZ won't even know what a haldex is. I found an place that focuses on European cars and they'd done them before in volvos and landrovers.


Sounds like you're still on low mileage compared to most, so I'd be slowly be ticking off preventative maintenance over next few services. Haldex, Rear Diff oil, Gearbox Oil, PTU oil, coolant...

Not sure I'd go to the xW-40 though, I seem to recall from another vehicle that the summer viscosity being so low is because oil gallerys are much finer than in the old days when we ran any old oil up to 50 or 60 weight.

The fine passages increase the pressure, I believe.

Don't imagine the oil passages like medical needles...
Didn't saw up until now passages with smaller diameter than 3 mm, not even on the camshaft area towards the hydraulic lifters.
And through 3mm and up will flow any oil even when cold.

Alex thanks for pointing out that we are being overly cautious.

I have used 0W40 and 0W30 in my LR2 since new.

For over 125,000 miles (201,000 KMs)

Lets talk about the viscosity at 100 C (for the specific oils I use)

0W30 - 12.1

0W40 - 13.5


That means that the 0W40 is about 11% thicker at engine operating temperature.


For 30 wt oil the viscosity range is 9.3 --> 12.5

For 40 wt oil the viscosity range is 12.5 --> 16.3


Someone decided that we should have 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60

If instead they had picked 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65 then both of the oils that I have used would be 35 wt.

They really are not that different even though one says 30 on the bottle and one says 40.

The 40 wt should be 33% thicker than the 30 wt but for the oils I've used its 11%

Or if you prefer to think about it this way

Use a thin 40 wt or a thick 30 wt and you will be fine.

I just checked my owners manual for a 2008 LR2

US Spec. 3.2

And it wants 5W30




For reference I ignored this specification since new and I’ve only used 0W30 and 0W40

But most USA LR2 owners have been running the 5W30 as provided by the Land Rover dealers service department
