2008 Freelander 2 i6 HSE Auto Tonga Green
Freelander i6 won’t start

Hi everybody.
Maybe someone here has had this or knows where to start.
Car just refuses to start. Has lots of very quiet relay ‘clicking’ sounds when the key is put in and taken out. Christmas tree lights on the dash,cd loads and unloads,etc etc. Normally I would immediately think battery but it is in perfect charge and no corroded terminals or fuses. Anybody got an idea? Please?

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Barolo Black

The ignition terminal virtually fell of my starter motor when I was removing it whilst changing the cam belt the other day. As good a place as any to investigate. Starter terminals at in an exposed position at the front of the engine and mounted on top of the starter. A little difficult for us humans to access, but not the elements. Good luck

Hi. Just to clarify. This particular Freelander is the model with the straight 6 petrol engine. Quite rare so will prob be difficult to get info on it.. is there a ‘rave’ cd for the freelander2?

Try starting in Neutral instead of Park (Make sure you are on level ground)

Hi all. Basically,There is an abnormal ‘movement’ of relays as soon as the key is put in the slot. ‘Things’ switch themselves on and off and the cd does not work.Radio does work. It really is as if the battery were nearly dead but at 12.7 volts,that cannot be the case. Somewhere there will be a bad connection of some sort but where?? Corroded earth perhaps? But where? Maybe someone out there has had similar?

2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Narvik Black

On the top of the positive battery terminal lead on the diesel motor and I’m assuming on the petrol as well is a fuseable link. It’s hidden under a small grey plastic cover which you have to break off to check and if it has blown the motor won’t kick over but the ignition will come and try to power everything up. I desperately had to get my car for its registration check when mine went so I soldered a very temporary paper clip in place (see photo)

so at least I could start the thing (not advisable). It may not be it but I would check it before moving on to all the other fuses.

Do a hard reset before searching for a bad connection

Hard Reset = remove battery leads and touch them together to get the voltage to drop to Zero

I am beginning to think that the fin famous steering colony lock is at fault. Anyone know how to dump the lock?

Auto correct is a pain.
I am now thinking that the steering column lock is at fault. Anyone know how to ‘dump’ the lock?

First verify that the lock is the issue

Verify that you can enter power mode II and attempt to start in Neutral instead of Park

Follow these instructions exactly
0. Engauge the emergency brake, is the LR2 parked on level ground if yes then proceed
1. Dock the key (Don't touch the Brake)
2. Press and hold the start button for 2 seconds (Don't touch the brake)
3. Press the Brake and move from Park to Neutral
4. While pressing the brake also press the start button (Does the engine start in Neutral?)
5. Shift back to park
6. Confirm that the Steering Colum lock has released (Can you turn the steering wheel, it will be stiff without power assist but it shouldn't be locked)
7. Did the steering column lock release?
8. With the transmission in park if everything is powered off then you should be able to undock the key
9. Note: you may need to press the start/stop button with your foot off the brake to get everything to shut down

Report back with your findings and further instructions will be provided
