I would recommend a Graphite Lock Lubrication,
leaves a DRY lubricating film that will not attract particles and gum up,
It is what lock smiths use.

I thought I’d check out the manual lock on the passenger door and I discovered that to get the cover off you need to insert the blade of the key into a hole in the underside of the cover and push it firmly upwards. This releases the internal plastic catch that secures the cover in place and it can then be easily removed from the door, complete with key. The lock was stiff to turn - clockwise - but it worked. But I think a squirt of appropriate lubricant would be a sensible precaution.

Fortunately {fingers crossed) I have never had to use the emergency key to unlock my LR but this thread prompted me to investigate my door locks.
The only external plastic handle cover with a lock symbol and key hole is the rear passenger door. I have not levered off the covers for fear of breaking them but am i correct in assuming that not all of the doors have external key locks and that my car must have had the plastic covers incorrectly fitted?
And why have they not made the drivers door the single emergency access one? surely that would be the most convenient.

It should be only the front passenger door with the lock.

Anybody know if the drivers door handle can be adapted in any way.
Clearly can't be swopped because it would be upside down. Common sense isn't very common.

Thanks for all the replies. They confirm what I thought that my car has the lock cover part of the external handle mis-fitted to the rear door.
To correct this I will have to remove the corresponding part of the front handle but this bit does not have a key hole to release it. I have looked but can't see how to do that without damaging it. Has anyone discovered a solution to this problem.

Could the vehicle been in the body shop for paint work ?

If so the handle end caps may have been fitted to incorrect doors by mistake.



The end cap currently fitted should just slide towards the back of the vehicle, as this end cap has none of the white plastic locking mechanism. IIRC
