Less likely to do any of those things than a German car (particularly BMW) of a similar age (less in many cases) judging by what I see at the roadside 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

Like any car, service it properly, budget & save for the bigger things so you don't feel under pressure down the track. Basic stress releasing stuff!

Clutch was changed earlier this year (£1.2k invoice!) and belt change last October, so should be all good for now, thankfully. 2010 HSE TD4 Lago Grey |

P.S. it will implode at some point, but you'll love it so much you won't hold it against the car and you will lovingly repair it and then have a moan on here. Been there. Got the t-shirt 😂 FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

During one of the said implosions, you will search out a good independent Landy garage. Then you will fall in love with their marketing and buy their merch.....

Depreciation is the thing people often fail to take into account when considering the cost of running an older vehicle as opposed to a new one.

Instead of a car better to spend the money on carpet for the house..... Oh buggger, that depreciates as well! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

My strategy is usually to buy a 3 year old low mileage car and keep it for 3 years or less than 80k miles, this time is different due to the virus and I am doing so little mileage that I will keep it for another year. I haven't done the maths but in my mind you either spend money on depreciation or repairs and after 7 years you can expect things to start going wrong regardless of mileage.

I tend to do 20-25k per annum so I've historically tried to buy cheap high-mileage but looked-after cars and run them for as long as I can. A bit like bangernomics but without the ability to buy, say, an old 7-series because of the crippling mpg.

Im hoping to keep our '64 plate FL2 a but longer yet. It only done 44000 and just 4K miles since Sept 2019 (and most of that was before Covid). Since retiring its become our our long distance and towing car only - now sits on the drive for weeks at a time. Jules |
