Scotland 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Orkney Grey
2013 Freelander 2 rear diff +drive shafts

I am currently doing a front to back preventative maintenance session on my 2013 face lift. Issues with the rear diff have been discussed many time on this forum but I understand from various owners that the diff problems are no longer an issue on 2013 models better Haldex software and more substantial bearings etc. Can anyone confirm this is the case? Also rear bearings and driveshafts, are there any out there other than LR spares that are just as strong as the LR genuine part. The vehicle will be used primarily, for towing.

Hi,
what miles are you on Question

unless you have an issue with the bearings or shafts I would leave them alone

what ever your miles, get the Haldex serviced including removing the pump and cleaning the little filter, not just the paper filter and oil change. (specific oil)

rear diff extract oil and refill or top up. (ep80w90 gl5)

Rear diffbearing failed on my 64 plate sd4 at c30,000mls in 2018 - fixed under warranty. LR fitted an updated bearing on post 2013 models but still continued to use inferior Indian manufactured items on some builds and it those which I believe cause premature failure. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Thanks for your replies. The vehicle has done 67K Haldex has been stripped and flushed with new fluid and service kit. It was in a bit of a state Diff has been flushed and refilled. There is a very slight rumble from the rear off side wheel bearing (difficult to tell) will do both with SKF hubs or LR parts. If its still there after dong the bearings then drive shafts. I cant detect any play in in the CV joints or the tripod. So moving on the diff must be suspect.

Make sure you rule out worn rear tyres first.

@Jack - Yes very good point - worn tyres can make hell of a rumble on these cars - often mistaken for worn hub/diff Jules

Thanks for that. Yep I have discounted that, new tyres all round. The old ones were near the legal limit. Going to put the vehicle
on the lift next week and have a play with it. LR parts are mighty pricey!! There must be OEM parts out there that are just as good.
