Mines on 76k and tight as a nut
These engines are described as bulletproof so hope it's nothing serious - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

If my wife ever sells my stuff for what I told her I paid for it, there will be some bargains out there!

Is it Taggarts on Maryhill Road you used by any chance? They seem to be about as much use as a chocolate teapot. They damaged our Range Rover, then utterly screwed up the paintwork on it to the point we had to have it sorted independently and have them billed for it.

Our Freelander put it's oil pressure warning light on only 4 weeks after the car went through the workshop due to the oil level being low. It was sent in to be looked at as it shouldn't have used that much oil in 4 weeks, the dealership then admitted that they didn't check the level when they health checked it.

It's been topped up and kept an eye on since and it's not used any since, Team Valley also had a look when it was serviced and couldn't see any leaks.

In the 4 weeks the car had only covered 600 miles so for it to have used that much oil in 600 miles there'd either be a puddle under it or thick smoke from the exhaust, neither of which we had.

Occasionally ours will start and then stop immediately, but it doesn't do it very often. When it does, it'll take 3 or 4 attempts to start it before it'll keep running.

Thanks David! It was Taggarts in Darnley, which sound much the same. Since going to an Independent garage who checked everything over, the oil light has not been on. I think that they charged me for oil, but didn't put it in as after doing the tests suggested, it all looked fine. Needless to say, I am going to stick with the independent garage who seems to take more care and doesn't rip me off!

I've really appreciated all the suggestions and help - what a great forum this is!

I have just had ALL the Powertrain modules updated on my car for �75 at an Independent in West Sussex.

(I also fitted an extra battery earth strap and a new battery - didn't make any diifference at all !)

Hi. Another petrol owner with a hot start issue. There's a software upgrade, SSM39291, that may or not fix your problem - if it's listed for your VIN. I tried booking my wife's in a couple of months ago but the dealer contacted me to say it wasn't listed as being applicable. Don't know if that means it's had it flashed in a previous life (in which case it didn't fix the issue) or not applicable to that VIN.
I'm going to just need to try changing sensors on a trial and error basis. Very very rarely, I've been able to coax it into life a little quicker than usual after leaving it to cool for a bit and, o those occasions, I think I can smell a stronger smell of petrol so I think the issue is ignition related but I don't know what. Something isn't letting the ignition fire at the right time/at all until it's been left to cool for long enough.
Things I've done so far; replace the crank sensor as this is usually textbook behaviour for this kind of issue on EVERY SINGLE OTHER CAR! and I've cleaned the MAF but neither have worked. Next steps are to work through changing the MAF (includes the air temp sensor), coolant sensor and then more research - maybe cam sensors. There's some experience that the fuel pipe routing can be to blame so I may look into that at some point. I feel your pain (and almost location, south Ayrshire!).

It's worth your while hanging around some Volvo forums (engine is used in some XC90s amongst others) or US forums for Freelanders as there's just not the expertise on here. Facebook pages can be worth a look too.

I have to agree with this as well as the Volvo forums since I believe this is a Volvo inline short 6 engine.

Harsh? I gladly acknowledge the helpful i6 owners on here, as few as they are. However when I first posted about the issue in a thread of my own, I got a fair few folk asking why I bought a petrol and I should have bought a diesel. Not the most helpful comments. There are defo 3 or 4 VERY helpful i6-ers on here.

With all due respect I think you have the wrong attitude

As a loyal Freel2 custodian you should be willing to do whatever it takes.

For future reference the correct reply is "I am certain that Mr. Paterson is ready willing and able to swap his 3.2 for a 2.0T but he is hesitant to do so because he can't be certain that's what his Freelander would want"

Now back to the topic,

Eccentricities of the Freel2 (some are 3.2 specific)

1. Voltage dip while cranking
--> if it drops below 10 Volts modules may latch-up
-----> Latched up modules will drain the battery over night
---------> to un-latch the modules preform a hard reset
-------------> to prevent the voltage dip I replace my battery every 4 years

2. Hot Soaking and a failure to restart for the 3.2
---> if the key is left in the dock on a hot engine it may not restart
---------> to clear the condition just undock the key and then redock and start as usual
-------------> to prevent the problem remove the key from the dock at the petrol station

3. Failure to start in the cold (button pressed but nothing happens) 3.2
---> To get the failure mode: dock the key (use your thumb), press the brake, and push the start button (index finger) all three in less than a second
-----> to prevent the problem pause and count to five between steps


Bonus points: my Volvo S80 with the 3.2 has these eccentricities as well, but it also wont start with the drivers door open.
