Not uncommon that road salt makes the seal surfaces for the large O-ring to corrode and start weeping your haldex oil over time. Clean the surfaces up with some fine emery paper and fit the haldex with a new O-ring.

Mine was like this also with nearly no oil when taken apart for the first time. Works superb (tried offroad) after a service like explained several places on this forum.

So today I chocked the front wheels and jacked up one rear wheel. With auto box in neutral and handbrake on, the rear wheel would not rotate as expected. I then started the engine and removed handbrake whilst still in neutral and the rear wheel would now rotate.

I then engaged sand mode in neutral and the rear wheel could still be turned slightly but there was a lot of resistance so that confirms that the haldex was working. Thanks for the tip!

I also jacked up the whole car and put the auto box in drive whilst in normal driving mode and all 4 wheels rotated is this correct? Was the haldex enabling the rear wheels because there was no resistance on the front 2? (all wheels off the ground)

If you think about it if the car is started as above then the drive would go to the front wheels and nothing to the rear. Front wheels would turn but not the rear wheels since the car is not moving. I think it would be like booting it from a standing start getting front wheel spin and then drive being applied to the rear wheels via the haldex.

Happy to be proved wrong as its only conjecture on my behalf. Jules

Hi,

two things you could try, a wet grassy slope steep enough that just front wheel drive will spin and not go up, try with other terrain options as well,

or

try to cross axle the car if you can get 1 front wheel in the air and just using revs, not momentum, to see if it engages the rear axle to get you going, again using the other terrain options to see if it alters anything Question

at least 1 mate required to watch/film whats happening when the wheels spin.

and if nothing else its good fun Laughing

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

As an additional note when I removed my haldex it looked like this

Yours appears to have a smooth shiny outer sleeve - never notice that on mine (gen4)

Hi Jules.
Is the Haldex a gen 3 or gen 4 in the video, i think i am right but the pump on a gen 3 as a black plastic cover not a metal one as in the video.

Give it a boot full coming out of a (preferably wet, up hill) junction. If haldex is working it won't wheelspin, if its not you'll get wheelspin from the front. Not very scientific but fairly accurate. Thumbs Up Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Its a gen4 in the video. The distinguishing features are that on the Gen 4 the filter cover is at 11 O'clock and the motor cover is metal and does NOT have a flat end.

The Gen 4 filter cover is very awkward to get at without removing the haldex unit. On my Gen4 the flange (not shown) is huge and prevents removal of the motor cover without first pulling the flange off. Jules
