2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

I had the clicking in the front passenger side and no start when the steering lock wouldn’t disengage.

Digger,

That’s unfortunate that the hard reset didn’t work

Next step

Dock the key but don’t touch the brake or clutch

Press the start button

Does the radio and Navigation if equipped turn on?

You will need to press start stop again to undock the key


If everything turns on then the next thing to check is the brake switch and the clutch switch

Do a search for more information

Good point it could be the steering column lock too

I have to check if the steering column lock disengages if I power up without starting the engine as I described above

The radio powers up fine... Everything works as it should. It just doesn't crank.

Search in the forum for the clutch switch??

I can only search/find things to do with the cruise control clutch switch? Is that the one??

Just done a quick test.

Without the clutch pressed, I have to hold the start button for what seems a few seconds for the dash to light up.
With the clutch pressed, it lights up instantly.
Does this mean that the switch is OK???

So the car is currently having a diagnostic done.

The comment from the bloke doing it 'it seems that every ecu has lost communication with the body control module'

This sounds serious 😔

You did the simple inexpensive fixes

The Hard Reset will typically restore communication

But in your case the problem goes deeper

Diagnostics complete.

The bloke seems to think that's it's one of two immobilisers??
One of these works with the steering lock?

He asked if I'd ever noticed that the steering lock isn't engaging when I remove the fob from the port? I've never noticed, just like I've never noticed the foot well relay click clacking noises when I power the ignition....

I await further information/advice from the guys on here...

I've got a headache now 🤕

The ECM decides if and when your engine starts.

If you are have communication problems to the ECU, it would be handy if you log the actual codes and order them by time.
This may give you an idea if a single control unit (or sensor) is failing.
If a more general fail then you need to get the 'High' and 'Low' Speed Buses checked.
A bad unit signal or main earth can lead to incorrect signals to units.

You need to know why the ECM is not sending the start signal to the start solenoid.

Overview
The starter motor is rated at 2.0 kW and is manufactured by Denso as a sealed pinion only unit. The starter motor is an
RA type that is offset in design; the solenoid is located directly behind the pinion to provide a more positive engagement
with the flywheel ring gear. The motor is geared directly to the pinion and is a pre-engaged type comprising a series
wound motor and an over-running clutch.

The motor is mounted on the Left-Hand (LH) side of the clutch housing and secured with 3 fixings. The pinion protrudes
through an aperture to drive the flywheel via a ring gear.

A small diameter cable is connected between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the solenoid. The solenoid is energized
by a signal voltage from the ECM when the starter switch is pressed. When engine cranking is requested, the ECM checks
for a received valid mobilization code before granting the crank request.
For additional information, refer to: Anti-Theft - Passive (419-01 Anti-Theft - Passive, Description and Operation).

Power for starter motor operation is supplied through a large diameter single cable, connected directly to the battery
positive terminal. The cable is protected with a sealed 'CAL3' type fuse, located at the battery end of the cable.

The cable is secured to the solenoid with an anti-rotational device and nut.

Could this be because the steering lock has failed and the immobiliser doesn't know if its locked or unlocked?? 🤔

I took my clue from this posting.

What were the diagnostic codes recorded and in what order did they occur. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)
