Wheelarch Protector Trim area gone Rusty

A few years back back I ran over a length of wood with a nail in that managed to end up in my tyre and wedged itself between the tyre and the inside of the wheel arch.

Landrover recovery came out and they managed to get it out, my tyre was ruined and there was a huge dent on the inside of the wheel arch, you could see it when opened the rear door, the was such a large dent the paint had cracked.

As my car was due for a service I just asked LR to sort it out, it cost me about 300 all in. They had to get rid of the dent, install a new liner and the protector trim and repaint a large area.

I had quite a few problems with the work, it had to go back twice, they had removed the whole trim that behind the rear door (with the LR badge) and in the end I complained to the manger who offered to send me a cheque for 50% refund... that they never sent me.

I've been going to another dealer since that I'm more than happy with, even tho it's over a 100 mile trip.

Now I come to my point, I noticed today in the area they 'repaired' the wheel arch protector has split, and I've got quite a rusty patch.

This is RIGHT where they had repaired it, and that wheel arch strip was replaced as part of the work

Do you think I've got any milage to go back to the Dealer after 3 years? or are they going to claim it's just 'normal ware and tear'?

If it was repaired by the dealers paint shop did they present you with a warranty for the repair?

Result of a botched repair job, shocking service from a LR dealer.
It's not even been repaired !!

I would say take it back to them to sort it, but they're obviously incompetent.

They didn’t have to bodge it, the wheel arch protectors as sold have built in obsolescence. They have some moulded in steel that is left exposed when cut to length. Add road salt and water and let the corrosion begin!

I dug out all the paperwork I got, and all I had was the invoice from the service with an extra item for 300, it does not even say 'body work' just a blank.

I've seen that mentioned a few times here, but mine seem to have something like looks like Silica in the middle, when I removed the one that had split it was like white sand that came out, tho some of it had soaked up the water. theres no steel in there that I could feel

".. mine seem to have something like looks like Silica in the middle .. "

I think you'll find the stiffening material in the middle is aluminium which turns to oxide with the salt and water that penetrates the exposed ends.

The edge trims on my first FL2 went the same way and now, on my second one they're swollen and busting open too. I've just ordered 5 metres of this to replace them -

It's slightly smaller than the original but near enough to do the job, I'll also squirt plenty of Dinitrol ML into the open ends of the trim before fitting to help keep rust at bay on the arch inner lip.

That’s what I put on mine a couple of years ago. Still looks ok with no obvious swelling like the originals

Had some corrosion in the same place when i bought my FL2 from where all the muck had collected. Repaired it myself, cleaned everything down to decent metal, used rust treatment on it (The one that converts rust back to metal), filled, sanded, primed and repainted and new protector trims fitted. Easy job to do and not expensive
