2010 freelander 2 2.2 coolant problem

Freelander 2 2010 coolant problem.
Recently noticed coolant loss. Have replaced the header tank and cap. I have noticed coolant on the top engine mount which leads me to believe that the coolant system is being subjected to excessive pressure. If I take the pressure off the cooling system by unscrewing the cap, there is no steam from the exhaust when starting the car the following morning. If I forget to take the pressure off the coolant system, I drive away for the first couple of miles with clouds of steam behind me like Jimmy Bond in his DB5.
No mayonnaise in oil, coolant is also fine. Following reading some posts, I have bought a new egr cooler and was just about to start fitting it today. Having done a pressure test today, I suspect that I may have other issues. The coolant system slowly lost pressure from 21 psi to 10 psi over 20 minutes or so.
I suspect I have an egr cooler fault due to the steam in the morning. As regards the overpressuring of the coolant system, I hope that this may be a water pump issue and hopefully not a head gasket failure or cracked head / block.
Vehicle otherwise drives / pulls well without warning albeit the coolant warning message sometimes is displayed, and I top up the system.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received.
Julian

I had similar on mine and it ended up being the EGR Cooler Gasket. £15 for part both sides, but £300-odd in labour as a right faff to get to.

Sperly. Thanks for info. I've taken the egr valve and cooler off today. Swine of a job. Am planning to put it back together tomorrow with new egr cooler and gasket. I'll keep you informed.

Sperly. Thanks once again for the info. Replacement of the EGR cooler would appear to have solved the issue. I had lost faith having done the pressure test but your post gave he enough hope to attempt the repair. A real pig of a job.

Indeed...a right ball-ache of a job.

Glad to hear that you have it sorted, and the tip paid off! Thumbs Up

Sperly. It would appear that I haven't solved my coolant loss issues. I haven't noticed due to lockdown and using one of my freelander 1s when I needed to go to work so haven't used the freelander 2 much recently. Changing the egr cooler has stopped the white smoke. I've now also changed the waterpump and cambelt.
I believe the water system is overpressuring since the coolant loss is evident on the top of the expansion tank and top engine mount. I have now changed the header tank, cap and egr cooler with genuine parts, and put new gates waterpump (and cambelt) on it. I haven't done a combustion test yet. Pressure tested it today and it wouldn't hold 21 psi for long. Tried running the car with the pressure tester connected and it wasn't long before the pressure exceeded 21 psi.
Can you offer any further assistance? Oil and coolant is clear and no vapour from exhaust. No water leaks in cabin. 2000 Discovery 2 TD5

Anyone able to offer any help before I'm tempted to throw a match at it?
I've just bought an egr blanking plate just to determine whether the egr valve is the issue. I changed the egr cooler but not the egr valve.
Have now got a combustion test kit so that is another test to be undertaken.
Any help / advice on how someone else might have addressed similar issues would be gratefully received.
The gain in pressure in coolant system is thought to be too slow/gradual to be a head gasket issue or crack in the block.
Besides, truck drives too well and there is no cross contamination in oil and water. 2000 Discovery 2 TD5

I had a head gasket fail in my Disco 2, pressurising the coolant. No other signs, car ran fine with no mixing of oil in coolant, Replaced head gasket and sorted. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Bobupndown. Thanks for your reply. The posts I've read on here all suggest that head gasket failure/cracked block is unlikely with the freelander 2 2.2 albeit I am also suspecting that this may be the issue. Hopefully combustion test and installation of egr blanking plate may draw light on the matter. I'll keep you informed of developments. 2000 Discovery 2 TD5

Did you manage to get to the bottom of this issue as I currently have the same problem and looking for advise?

Pin hole in bottom of top hose where it connects to thermostat housing. Difficult to see as obscured due to close proximity of bottom hose. My recommendation is to change both hoses. Apparently, they are a serviceable part! Worked well for ages but my woes have returned. Currently overpressuring the coolant system and forcing water out of the overflow. I seem to have burped all of the air out of the system, so suspect an issue with the pipe to the bottom of the header tank or a blockage in of the breather hoses from the thermostat housing and radiator. 2000 Discovery 2 TD5
