Not posted before but having some issues with my Freelander 2 LE Sport 2011.

It won't start! It was intermittent before but now nothing. It was ok for a while if I jumped it from the wifes car, now that doesnt work.
Battery checked and charged, starter motor replaced, aux earth strap fitted..

Last time it ran it was measuring 14.6V at the battery so presumably the alternator is ok.

When I press the start button it just clicks over and over then stops.

Any clues?

I have a video of the clicking over and over but cannot seem to upload it

The battery is likely toast; any messages or lights on the display?

Try discoing the battery leads and leaving them off and apart for about 35 minutes. Confirm the ground you added also.

I'm guessing that, under load, your battery is low in amperage.

EDIT: Just read you post about click from the starter........that could mean the starter is bye bye......

Battery was taken off and charged for about 8 hours in total, starter is new.

Maybe the battery amperage as you say is poor, guess that needs to be checked.

The thing is it doesn't even start with a jump now....

If it will not start with assistance from a jump start is it turning over slow
Have you checked the starter connectors do you have a obd reader it will show battery voltage under load
If all Electrics are good when did you last change the fuel filter
Maybe fuel starvation

Ok so checked the starter motor cables etc, then tried a jump again and it started.

Then I turned it off and checked the voltage from the battery, it seemed to be going down quite fast. Battery 18 months old and visual indicator shows it's ok.

Must be the battery, why else would the voltage be dropping so quickly after turning off the engine?
Reads at 14.6 when running so alternator seems to still be ok

14.6 when running is good as you can test the battery do the test when disconnected to prove its not a leakage problem

Yeah the battery does not seem to be running down when it's disconnected....

Now the fun starts
Only way I know to find a leakage is connect back up then whilst testing start pulling fuses if the drain stops that's the problem circuit hopes this helps

To load test my Battery I do the following

1. Check the voltage at the battery and charge it if it’s below 12.5 Volts

2. Get a helper to start your freel2

3. Measure the Voltage dip at the battery while your helper presses the start button


The Voltage will dip but it should be above 10 Volts

When you have measured the dip voltage the path forward will be more clear.

No benefit if the engine is running to find a system battery drain

I think p_gill is just asking the OP to do a simple load test on the current battery. If the voltage drops below 10 when cranking then the battery is kaput, dead but lazy to fall........

Thanks that is exactly the point.

The original poster needs to know if they have a battery problem or if they have a problem with a parasitic drain.

I did see the information that the Voltage dropped quickly when the engine is shut off.

If the drop is from 14 Volts to 12.5 Volts then the system is working

If the drop is from 14 Volts to 10 Volts or less the the battery is done


For me the best way to load test the battery is to measure the voltage dip when starting
