Haldex/Diff Gurus

Hi guys, as my Freeo gets longer in the tooth I'm thinking about those bigger service items.

Do we have anyone like Austen at Bell Engineering who all our Northern siblings pay homage to? Mainly with respect to all things Haldex and Differential, I have a good mechanic for engine stuff.

Hi Jeff,

I haven't used them as yet but I sent an enquiry to Roving Mechanical about a fluid change for the transmission, Haldex and diff. Their reply explained the rear diff and haldex don't have drain plugs so they would have to remove the haldex to drain.
They would also have to remove a driveshaft then remove the housing to drain rear diff.
The approximate cost on doing that including changing the transmission oil would be $340 in oils and 4 hours labour $520. Total $860.

I haven't made any other enquiries so not sure how this compares. Their credentials and reviews seem pretty good and I think I've seen some recommendations for them either here or on the AULRO website.

If you are going to remove the Haldex you should give it a good clean inside. Remove the clutch plates, clean them all individually as well as the pump. A new filter will also be required.
There is an excellent YouTube video about it. Unfortunately its in Rumanian ( I think ) but still worth the watch. That's what I followed when I did mine. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

I did mine recently on the driveway using a set of drive up ramps. Removed the propshaft, unbolted and removed the haldex as a complete unit, removed the pump and cleaned its filter and replaced the main haldex filter, new O ring and back in and refilled with Haldex oil, cost including oil, filter and o ring was about £50.
(Ididnt disassemble the clutch pack or clean it - not sure that many do?)

Its not difficult, just a bit fiddly. There is thread on here with illustrations, also took a few photos while I did mine on this thread:

Got my local independant to drill and tap the rear diff - much easier in future. Most places should be used to sucking out a diff if you didn't want to fit a drain hole...

The Haldex is same as in volvo - any 'euro car specialists' around you? It didn't take me long to find one that actually knew what a haldex was, and had serviced one before. I'd ask them to take a photo of the internal mesh filter on the pump - partly so you know they actually did it, and also how badly it needed doing. Oh, and get the oil/replacable filter yourself to give them, that'll save you some $ right there. You got a Gen3 or Gen4 Haldex?

Nope didn't need to, just the prop shaft which is conveniently supported by the exhaust when you lower it down. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I recently replaced my Haldex with a second hand one.

I took the plastic filter off and replaced it.
Equivalent parts for the Gen 4 filter are:
LR032998 Land Rover
31325173 Volvo
9v4n4a319aa Ford

I also removed Haldex precharge motor and its filter

These two were relatively simple to do and recommended in all Haldex units - Volvo / Ford Kuga etc

I wasn’t game to open up the Haldex unit and clean all the clutch plates as the oil was not particularly dirty.

I don’t think it would be particularly difficult for your mechanic to drop the propshaft so that the Haldex can be removed from the differential and the filters cleaned. Remember to make sure the proper Haldex oil refilling procedure is performed so that the Haldex is adequately filled with oil. My original Haldex died because it wasn’t filled properly after the differential was replaced Rolling Eyes

Volvo AOC (Haldex) oil is the same and comes cheaper and in a litre bottle.
