P245 Fault on 2011 HSE TD4

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone can advise me whats going on with my Freelander 2, my local garage are scratching their heads after 2 visits there and now its got worse. All started about 3 weeks ago when an engine management light appeared on the dash and no impact on performance. Plugged in a cheap odb reader and it showed code p245a which i thought 'egr valve/cooler', took a while to get a booking from my garage and they had a look and said 'not sure, too many codes to decipher cause, so we have removed them all, take it for a drive and bring it back if eml comes back on', ok a day later it reappeared so took it back again, they said 'could be dpf or egr or glow plugs or glow plug module according to their code reader'. On investigation they found one glow plug melted at the end, fine they changed it and gave me car back and a couple of days later eml on again still with same p245a code. I will now get to today, went outside to get something out of the car and i thought i will read codes again and check for any pending or other ones after a short drive but car wouldn't start. Battery output 7.8 volts and code p245a still there and constant electrical whining type noise like a circuit is constantly powered and key stuck in ignition. Currently charging the battery to see if that will release key and stop noise. Anyone got any ideas whats going on, could it be faulty glow plug module causing glow plug melt, p245 error and now constant energised system circuit? Will it need a Land Rover specialist? Or is there something i can suggest they do when they get the car tomorrow?

JB

Yeah, a battery that low will likely need replacing or at the very least, reconditioning. Sadly, it will only complicate matters with these vehicles.

Have a read here https://www.obd-codes.com/p245a

You need to replace that battery before anything else though.

Currently disconnected battery and charging overnight. See if it starts in the morning. Would a specialist be best to diagnose cause of p245a fault?

Could a faulty glow plug module cause all these issues inc battery discharged or has a faulty battery caused it all. But what symtoms would there have been if the battery was deteriorating?

Might be wrong but I honestly don't think you will get that battery back from such a low voltage. It might start in the morning but as for holding a charge that's another matter. Good luck.

Just charged it for about 4 hours and multimeter says output is 14.8v, putting it on maintenance charge overnight. I bet its that glow plug module knackering everything up.

A high pitched whine after shutting down the engine is normally diagnosed as a problem with the throttle valve.
You do realise that you need to double press the lock button on the remote to initiate the shutdown of systems and to fully arm the alarm. Not doing this can lead to the battery flattening.
There are often sub codes following the general code you’ve given that are specific to make/model. You probably need to find someone with a code reader that can read the sub codes.

After my battery has charged i will get the key out of the docking station and i will try locking it to see if that stops the electrical whining. Is the glow plug control module easy to replace? I know it located on the bulkhead near where the wiper motor is but not sure what has to be removed to get to it. Anyone know if having a faulty glow plug module will have knacker a glow plug or two again?

Update: Battery charged up and started car just about. Dropped off at garage and waiting for further diagnosis. They still think faulty module causing all the issues.

the code could relate to a turbo charger waste-gate control, but this fault often flags if the battery voltage drops.
the whining could be the throttle body running.

its needs authentic diagnostic equipment and someone with good diagnostic ability, otherwise it starts getting guess works and and open book for parts. Jaguar x-type sport gone

Further update.. Picked up car after battery replacement and all seemed fine. But went out shopping ltoday and after a mile or so on dual carriageway eml came on and when plugged into odb reader it said p245a again. So it's had 4 new glow plugs and a new battery. What next? Any ideas? Think I will take it to a local land rover specialist. Any recommendations near Leicester?
