Rear shock top nut

Started to change my rear shocks and got the first one off but cant get the top nut to release
The nut and thread are very rusty so soaked in wd40 for a few days then put a ring spanner on the top nut and tried to grip the piston shaft with mole grips which slip off no matter how tight
Thought I would cut through the shaft but it seems to be hardened steel the hacksaw doesn't touch it
Any ideas how to get this off ? Cant cut the nut off as its recessed
Cant get in with a grinder to cut the shaft because of the spring, cant heat the nut as
the top mount under the plate is plastic
Maybe weld a bar on to the piston shaft to stop it turning?

You do realise it has provision for an Allen key in the top of the piston strut.

Try splitting the nut by drilling down into it starting as close to the thread as you can then working outwards. if you cannot get the nut to split repeat the drilling on the opposite side of the nut as this will make the nut easier to slacken and it should allow you to hold the shaft with mole grips. Good luck!

Drilling down through the thread worked and heated the nut enough for it to turn
