The not changing up when cold thing seems to be fairly normal in our fleet. Both the Merc SLC (9 speed auto) and the SD4 both hang on to gears longer when cold. Leaving the little cull de sac we live in with the merc, I have to flip a paddle for 2nd as it will stay in first all the way out at embarrassingly high revs.

I changed my autobox ATF at 40K miles (5 years old car) - there was a noticeable improvement in the timeliness and smoothness of the gear changes - I would definitely recommend changing the ATF as has already been suggested. Jules |

You haven't told us if this has suddenly started happening or is the car new to you etc? My FL1 auto used to do exactly this and it was programmed to stay in low gear until warmed up a little. I used to put it into manual for the first half a mile or so. My 14 reg SD4 54k miles doesn't do it at all though. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Sorry, with hindsight my post may not have been too sensible to make as I haven’t experienced a low miler Freelander. I bought mine (60 reg) with over 100kmiles on it, and it has always been just like the Merc, which has behaved like that from new.

The filter is inaccessible without removal of the gearbox. Just change the ATF 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Black machine in the middle ![]() ![]() Connects into the gearbox oil cooler, measures the pressure and flow of the oil coming out the gearbox, and automatically replaces it with the corresponding new oil. Effectively, like a dialysis ![]() |
