SD4 AUTO BOX

I am having 2 issues with my 60 plate hse auto 130k that maybe related
When cold in normal drive mode with very little throttle it will not change from first to second untill nearlr 3000 revs, but is ok once warm.
Also when put in reverse it is reluctant to move with out higher revs than normal
Am i going to be looking at a replacement gearbox
TIA

Has it had a gearbox oil change?, that would be my starting point. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

The not changing up when cold thing seems to be fairly normal in our fleet. Both the Merc SLC (9 speed auto) and the SD4 both hang on to gears longer when cold. Leaving the little cull de sac we live in with the merc, I have to flip a paddle for 2nd as it will stay in first all the way out at embarrassingly high revs.

Haven’t got the issue you have going backwards though.

I changed my autobox ATF at 40K miles (5 years old car) - there was a noticeable improvement in the timeliness and smoothness of the gear changes - I would definitely recommend changing the ATF as has already been suggested. Jules

You haven't told us if this has suddenly started happening or is the car new to you etc? My FL1 auto used to do exactly this and it was programmed to stay in low gear until warmed up a little. I used to put it into manual for the first half a mile or so. My 14 reg SD4 54k miles doesn't do it at all though. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

Sorry, with hindsight my post may not have been too sensible to make as I haven’t experienced a low miler Freelander. I bought mine (60 reg) with over 100kmiles on it, and it has always been just like the Merc, which has behaved like that from new.

Sorry if my post added confusion. Those are also the only 2 autos I have had, so that is my total experience with what I thought was just a normal auto warm up feature across manufacturers.

Best listen to the others Smile

gearbox flush and fluid/filter change, I think about £250 give or take...….. if you can find anywhere to do it at the moment

anyone remember that wheeler dealers episode when the dodgy Brewer bought a Porsche Boxter for £1000 with a flaky gearbox but apparently fixed it with a fluid and filter change ??

The filter is inaccessible without removal of the gearbox. Just change the ATF 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

08 FL2 TD4 SE Manual in Rimini Red (Now Gone)

Its a DIY job if you dont mind a bit of mess.

One method is sequential draining and refilling with new ATF to dilute the old ATF to very small %. I did it this way. No special tools needed.
JLR dont make refilling to the correct level easy though as there is no dipstick or side fill plug. The drain and level plug are combined into a single 2in1 plug.

Just in case you are not familar with changing the ATF on autoboxes - when you drain the ATF a significant amount remains within the torque convertor. You cannot drain all the ATF out in one go, unlike manual gearboxes. Jules

Here is a flush I done just last week. Little over 100k Miles

Even with a stated capacity of 7 litres, we find that the oil is still very dirty, so we flush 12 litres through each time

Here's a few pictures of the procedure Thumbs Up

Forgot to get a picture of the final, finished oils though Rolling Eyes

Hi Mike,
How do you do the oil flash. Do you do it electronically?
Thanks

Hi Mikey

What does your garage charge for a ATF flush on a Freelander 2 and what fluid do you use in a 2014 model?

Black machine in the middle Thumbs Up

Connects into the gearbox oil cooler, measures the pressure and flow of the oil coming out the gearbox, and automatically replaces it with the corresponding new oil. Effectively, like a dialysis Thumbs Up
