Glow Plug Issue

Have read and followed a few threads but none so far have helped.

Require some detailed info on the operation sequence for the electrical circuit.

Can't remember ever seeing the glow plug light in all the years I have owned the car.
Problem started a couple of months ago, poor start up an some light grey smoke.
Checked the battery, that was OK.
As the car is over 10 yrs old with the original glow plugs decided to just replace them as required the same amount of effort to test.
Purchased a set of Bosch plugs, removed old ones and fitted new. Just out of interest tested original ones, found to have almost the same resistance as the new, well within limits.
No different on start up.
Checked both fuses in the engine bay, OK. Removed the relay and checked that, working OK.

My suspicion is that the plugs are not getting any power but don't know what or how to test next.

Any technical help would be much appreciated. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

No body knows anything about diesel Freelanders then.

Should have purchased an expensive watch instead, plenty of takers for that thread. Rolling Eyes Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

There is nothing much in the JLR manual about testing the glow plugs and their ECU controller. But the Haynes manual is , surprisingly, a little better.

All it says is you need a multi meter to check the glowplugs' supply voltage (ECU, relay, cable check) and the glowplugs' resistance (faulty glowplug) - no need to remove glowplugs at this stage

My understanding is you need to check the voltage supplied to the glowplugs during the preheat phase - might be a 2 person job depending upon your equipment Jules

Hi Gasman I had similar problems with my previous car Chrysler Grand Voyager I think this procedure to check would be the same, have you checked dc voltage to glow plugs should be around 12v but not less than 10volts

1/ Meter set to DC volts & connect negative probe to the battery negative. Then connect the positive probe to any one of the glow plug tips.

2/ Switch the ignition on & observe the meter for a good 10 seconds there should be around 12V but not less than 10V, If less then points to relay is defective or the fuse has blown?

Ended up checking my glow plugs resistance and found was higher than ten ohms, So I bought new genuine Chrysler glow plugs that fixed ok.

Thanks for the replies, it's really appreciated. Very Happy

First off the plugs are new and out of interest checked the resistance before fitting, all OK.
As for checking the voltage, not possible unless you remove the inlet manifold. Really don't want to do that if possible.
What I did do though was use an amp clamp meter at the 60amp fuse in the engine bay. Put it around the tail leaving the fuse and had a second person try the ignition. Should have had a draw of approximately 40amp. Nothing.. Question

I hear what you are saying regarding the outside temperature is now well above 0 degree and the plugs probably would not be initiated.
As the issue of poor starting still exists when cold ( first thing in morning only ) may be I should be looking for a different issue and the glow plugs are just clouding the issue. Rolling Eyes

Any other thought's would be much appreciated. Thumbs Up

Its not as though I'm in a rush now as confined to house. Sad

I'm going to define that as the end of the drive . Whistle Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

If you search for glow plugs there has been extensive discussions on the subject, re timing and operation I believe Alex did a good write up on the subject.

Thanks Seagull1
I have read all the posts I could find on the subject including the one from Alex, re the process of operation.
What I am now trying to find is a wiring diagram so that I can test any components, sensors etc. in the loop.

Still appreciate the prompt regarding the search. Thumbs Up
Its amazing how many people just ask the question before doing a search themselves. Rolling Eyes Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

you can find a full set of wiring diagrams in the tech section but be careful there are two types of glow plug 12v and I think 5v, the older 12v system just has a relay in the engine fuse box and the newer 5v system has a glow plug control relay in the bulkhead area around the battery.

Long time ago since the diesel filter was replaced? Might be worth a try if so.

Think the filter was changed around June last year. Haven't done many miles since.
That said it won't be the first time I've been let down by that, so worth a look.
Usually change the filter at every service regardless.

Thanks for the tip though. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

I've just replaced my glow plugs, BUT
discovered the supplied plugs are 12v with the 8mm head, whereas the old ones are 5v with 10mm head.

Are they interchangeable, as the ones I got are allegedly for 07+ vehicles.

Thanks for any help MY11 SD4 SE Auto

I have just been doing research prior to changing my glow plugs. I came to the conclusion that chassis number AH are rated at 11 volts, chassis number BH are rated at 5 volts. The two systems are fundamentally different and not interchangeable.
