United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Sumatra Black
Hello & and a Question

Hello guys just thought I’d say hello, I’ve been lurking around for a while and after reading about and looking at other members Frl2’s I’ve got a test drive this Saturday at my local dealers Stratstone’s in Stockton. The only thing is the sales guy seemed very keen that I test drive the automatic rather than a manual. How do the two compare when it comes to mpg. Would have thought that the manual would be better, what are other owners experiences.

I’ll post an update after the test drive, but from what I’ve read on the forum it should meet all my expectations

Cheers
Tony

2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black

Hello and welcome.

I only tested a manual and think it is superb. I have read that others on here with auto's think the same. I think it comes down to what you will be using it for and if you feel the extra is worth it.

I don't know the mpg figures, butthe CO2 rating gives an indication. For the auto, its 224 g/km. For the current manual 194 g/km. The new manual has the auto stop/start option (stops the engine when you stop in traffic), and I think some other features, reducing its claimed emissions to 179 g/km.

BTW, CO2 emissions will not destroy or even damage the planet. But urban air pollution is bad (causing smog and asthma). This is the reason for fuel efficiency. The auto is a very nice drive, but I was influenced by the fuel efficiency to go for the manual. On order.

I have had experience in both a manual (courtesy car for a week) and an auto (mine) and prefer the auto hands down - remember the manual is 6 speed so you will have a lot of gears to change through!

The difference in mpg depends on where you drive, my auto achieves 25-28mpg in town whereas the manual was around 32-36mpg. However hit the motorway and the difference isnt as great, I done a 170 mile trip to Milton Keynes last week and got 38.1mpg!! The same trip in the manual was 40.1mpg.

Another feature of the auto is the option of using it as a semi-auto or whatever it is called where you manually move the shifter forward or back to change up and down the 6 speed auto box. Have found that I can get another 5mpg using this as the auto wont change gear until the revs hit about 1900rpm whereas with the shifter you can do it at about 1500rpm - obviously this defeats the purpose of having an auto if you are going to do this all the time Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
Gone - 2014 BMW X3 M Sport Space Grey, faultless!

I'd go for auto tried the manual box not a patch on the auto, and you should still get 30-32 mpg on the motorway. Haggle hard and try to get auto box in the deal aswell as a good discount of course!!!

Haggle til the salesman cries Big Cry Really take the Censored , dealers have been doing it to us for long enough, keep sending him back in to his Sale managers office-dont forget THE WORM HAS TURNED! When he says thats the best deal he can do, remember he's got another 2 more best offers in him-even if you walk out he'll be on the phone within 24hrs.
How I wish I was in the market for a new one, the cracking deal I got in Oct 07 pales into insignificance with the deals that are to be had at the moment Thumbs Up

I went for my test dive today in a Auto HSE, really impressed with everything including the auto box. Leaps a head of my 5yr old X-trail, big bonus was the wife seemed to like it as well.

Probably looking at going for a Se between 6 – 12 months old, will definitely be looking for a good deal, mind you the sales guy looked to be about 15, but seemed quite knowledgeable. Bring on the sales banter and challenge

Cheers

Hello......

I'm new on the site....
..just bought a Freelander 2....as the car for my daughter to use
quite jealous really.....as we drove the FL2 home was well impressed comparing to my Disco 3
fast, quiet, corners well, economical & very plush...

question
if anyone has the knowledge of the Sat Nav system & how to switch off the trace points in the normal map display?
(these are the little white dots that record where you have driven)
We cant find the menu command that switches these on or off
