Looking at getting another freelander. Previously owned two FL1's.and loved them both. I have seen a FL2 with 140k on the clock. What sort of mileage are these doing before major engine issues. Anything else I should look out for? Does it have a timing belt or chain?

What sort if money are you looking at for a cambelt fitting?

About £600 with full service and water pump

Non Land Rover “proper” garage in November charged me £375 to supply and fit the cambelt, waterpump, tensioner kit. LR dealer is a lot more expensive so use their price in your negotiation at 550 - 700 quid plus anything else that they find in the process.

Good luck with finding your car. Should be just about run in enginewise at 140k, but make sure you listen closely to the transmission noises, lots of threads on here about that.

Is it an auto or manual?

Assuming a private sale or no warranty, I’d want to make sure that the diff and clutch (if manual) are ok. And check that the Haldex wiring hasn’t been disconnected to mask problems there. Getting someone to check for fault codes might be a good plan. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Range Rover 2-door V8 (not sure of year - 4-speed box and vacuum diff switch)
Series III SWB Diesel

It won't necessarily need a cambelt change, I bought my 07 last year with 130k. It had a cambelt in 2016 at 108k so should be good for another few years or 220k.

Check service history for proof of diff replacement/refurb, throttle body work, turbo boost pipe replacement and a cambelt change. All these seem to be the favourites for failing (not the belt) and had all been done on mine as well as a turbo, gearbox and diff oil change at 110k.

140K. When you said "High Mileage" , I was expecting you to be talking about 180K + !!
As already said, 140K is just about run in , assuming it's been serviced regularly and at the correct intervals.

but you dont mention what year or what engine your looking at

so just to confirm for memory
the Cam belt schedule originally for the TD4 was 10 years or 150k (which ever comes first)
then when the SD4 came along L/R dropped the schedule for Both engines to 7 years or 112k (which ever comes first)
not sure what year that was 2011/12

But its now gone way up Norf

At that mileage, in addition to what have already been mentioned. you shold check history for:

- Clutch change. (check for slipping) Seems to fail early on some models, seems to last lifetime on others. Mine need to be done now @ 170kmiles
- Wheel bearings, seems to last around 140k
- Shock absorbers, rear
- Glow plugs
- Camshaft on -07 models. Soem suffers breakage where it connects to the diesel pump. Issue sorted with modified camshaft on -08 and onward models
- Haldex service.

Hi Tony , What mileage are you after. Mines just gone onto 170000 , im 2nd owner. Any ideas of a price you want to pay ? Chris

Thanks guys. You've given me a few more points on what to look for. The car I was looking at has been sold so I'll keep looking.

I think most people on here would point you towards Bell Engineering for any Haldex servicing. I've seen numbers under the 200quid mark thrown around. Unfortunately bit far for me to drive.

I'd also check out the look of the steering fluid and feel of the steering at sllloooowww speeds. Some older ones had a weld splatter problem that eats the steering pump and steering rack if it's not been kept on top of.
