Timing belt off centered 2.2 SD4


Hi all I'm looking to see if I can diy .

My timing belt kit was replaced 3 years ago and now while doing home service I find out is running off centered I think tensioner is a problem, can I just open the cover and change tensioner without removing the belt and doing all the setting that are done when doing a complete job?

Just wondering if I can avoide workshop as it's 300km from me. FOREVER LEARNING

What’s the other edge look like?

It might be that’s within spec and not running off the edge of the wheel the other side.

I’d check first before worrying. Regards

How much off center? 2-3 mm is no problem...

Anyhow, yes, you can take the upper cover off and set the tension right.

But, do not unscrew the crankshaft pulley, as you will "screw" the valves/camshafts timing!
Unless you have the locking tools for locking the crankshaft and camshafts and then you can set it all back.

Changing the tensioner will make no difference to the running of the belt. That is determined by the belt guides on the crankshaft pulley gear and timing ring which are not adjustable. In any case, whilst you can adjust the tension with the top cover off, you will not be able to replace it without removing the lower cover. It's fine, I’d leave well alone if it were mine. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Fair enough. Some here don't believe in allowing for mistakes OR learning.

FWIW if I saw that belt I'd be asking questions and investigating too, it doesn't look right. Can you see the other edge of the belt at all?

From the polished witness marks it looks like it has moved outwards recently 🤔

It looks alright, if you ask me...
If you are looking closely, on the right side of the belt you will see some small white "pixels" on each of the sprocket's teeth.
In reality, those whites are the marks from the polished path where the belt travels.
So, it can be concluded that the belt is no more than 1 mm off centered from the old path.
In fact, many times a sub millimeter wobbling is normal and it's coming from the cutting process of the belt.
And a sub millimeter offset, when the belt is 25 mm wide (1 inch) is nothing.
I had, before changing the belt, an offset from the polished path of about 2 mm, probably from the tensioner as you said, and all was good.
Now the new belt is tracking like yours is in your picture.

PS. Seems that above Bob just beat me in posting quicker the same thing. Very Happy

It’s not on mine it is the same width as the pulley yours in the pic doesn’t look right to me but it’s encouraging Alex says it’s ok he knows his stuff.

Yes, whether you class the excess as “much” I am not sure, usually it’s a few mil each side on the main pulley wheels. Regards

If you look at the secondhand camshaft pulleys for sale on eBay, they all have the belt running off to one side. Perfectly normal.
