Jules, maybe the focal point of the LEDs differs to the halogen HB3s - if so, headlights may need adjusting to compensate? In your pics, it looks like the point where the beam hits the road (ie the brightest point) is much lower and closer to the front of the car with the LEDs than it is with the halogens?

That’s the problem with LED replacement bulbs, very few (if any) can place the LED array in exactly the same position as a normal filament Halogen, the HiD bulbs (in the kits) can in fact be positioned correctly hence why the HiD kits work really well, but LED not so much. Regards

I thought of that - but I dont see how the lights can be adjusted any higher because the dipped beam cut off seems about right. I dont want that any higher.

Anyway I've put the halogens back in and will have a play when we're back from our hols. Jules

How do the HiD upgrade kits allow for filament re-positioning by the installer?
Or do you mean positioned by the manufacturer ?

I'm probably going to try the Stealth-X HiD kit. Blew yet another halogen after I reinserted them. Jules

Theres no adjustment they are simply a replacement bulb and ballast. Work perfectly out of the box. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

They don’t, or shouldn’t be user adjustable....an HiD bulb is just another “glass” envelope with a point source light within, the air gap of the HiD can be positioned in exactly the same place as the filament of the Halogen bulb design, as long as the base to filament dimensions are copied the HiD will be perfectly focussed, it’s how genuine HiD bulbs work. Regards

Ive just discovered that, unfortunately, converting a halogen headlight unit to HID is a mandatory MOT fail.

Its very clear here under section 4.1.4 https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection...tion-4-1-5

"Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp."

The regulations make no mention of LED conversions though.

So it looks like Im sticking with continuing to replace my HB3 bulbs or source a complete hid setup Jules

Jules,

Its takes 10 minutes to whip the headlights out and change the bulbs back to halogen for one day for an MOT test and another 10 to pop the HIDs back in. I'm happy to suffer that small inconvenience for the benefit of superior lighting the rest of the year. But first MOT in April coming up Im just going to leave them in and see if they are even bothered by them being there, worst that will happen is a retest. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

LED bulbs are also a fail, no LED aftermarket headlamp bulb is E marked and thus not homologated for road use.

I have been using good HiD kits in projector lamp vehicles for years, many years and NEVER had a fail, or even a mention, make sure they are correctly aimed and they are just as good a beam as halogen, just brighter and last....well I’ve never had one fail. Regards

David
