Sorry for opening a new thread, I have the standard bulbs and read reports about the LED bulbs not being very good, saw these on fleabay and wondered...Are they worth a punt? Be glad for thoughts of those that have tried and if so what to look for and what not, also do they give any benefit? Cheers.

so by that i take it to mean they wont any FL2 at all

i researched bulbs to the death when i had my FL2

LED dont seem to work too well with the 2013> projector HB3 bulb fitment, apparently the projector lens isnt the correct shape or something.

quite literally the ONLY solution i found was to fit basic bog standard bulbs bought direct from LR parts desk.

Just fitted 2x GE 50% longer life HB3 bulbs after previous high intensity bulbs exploded whilst driving at night. Thankfully my fog lights saved what would have been a perilous cross country journey. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

The problem with LEDs as a replacement for headlight bulbs is that they dont emit light at the correct focus point for the reflectors which are designed for the tiny central filaments of incandescent bulbs. The emitted light then gets mis-reflected within the light, with a resultant awful beam. This is especially true of projector lens. Jules

What about these, Jules? These are what I've just bought and fitted today after both the Halfords 'Advanced' +100% brighter HB3 bulbs I had installed in my 2013 FL2 XS shattered within 3 months/4,000 miles.

Cost about £40 for the pair from Amazon. Generally good reviews. They caught my eye because the HB3 fitting is exactly the same size and dimensions as a standard OEM HB3 bulb, and they've been designed so the LED chip sits in exactly the same place as the filament of a standard halogen bulb. They've also got in-built fans at the base of the casing to aid cooling - because as others have noted, it's the daft shutter design of the 2013-on FL2 headlights that seems to cause higher-powered bulbs to overheat and explode.

I haven't tried them properly yet, but they look bright in the headlamp housing, and seem to throw good light on both dipped and main beam. As I say, I haven't done any proper testing other than shining them against the garage doors, then reversing a few metres back and examining the beam pattern, but so far I'm optimistic. Will report back next time I head out in the dark...

Interested to see what the beam pattern looks like! Although can't see working as well in an older reflector housing like mine.

Update: those Novsight bulbs I posted about above proved to be no good for my 2013 projector halogens. They threw the beam a good distance on dipped and main beam but were very spotty, with black patches in the beam pattern. So I sent them back.

BUT... I have now found a set of 9005/HB3 LEDs that work really well. Eureka! Also from Novsight, ordered via Amazon, but designed specifically for projector type headlights. They have two angled Cree LED clusters that don't leave black spots. The design is bulkier than a standard hb3 bulb and it has an in-line canbus controller, but it all fits inside the headlight assembly without any fuss.

Not cheap at £69.99, though currently 20% off, which brings the price down to reasonable levels, especially compared to the cost of premium halogens, especially at the rate I was burning through them. Here are some pics of the beam from the new LEDs. It's a bright 6500k white, but no blue tinge. I would say it's near HID quality - I'm really impressed.

Good result, so that's at least 2 options to replace the woeful HB3 halogen candles, these LEDs and the HID kit that Ive recently fitted, they seem to have similar looking light outputs. Very interesting post and pictures, I have read a lot of negative re LED beam pattern etc so much so I have resisted the temptation but these look good, I wonder if they would pass an MOT though with the beam pattern?? 2014 Freelander 2 XS TD4

Do these just replace the normal HB3 halogens in the headlights with the shutter arrangement (2014). Just a simple replacement ?

I've just bought some genuine LR bulbs , so if its a simple replacement . might consider on next change

Yes, straight swap for a standard HB3 bulb. The collar fitting is exactly the same and it just plugs into the standard electrical connector. There is an in-line canbus canceller, but there's plenty of room inside the FL2 headlight to accommodate it.
